Spurrier making no predictions

Steve Spurrier won't walk out on that limb, not this year and certainly not before South Carolina shows him something on the field. It was this time last summer when Spurrier talked up his team's chances to rise beyond the middle-of-the-Southeastern Conference status they'd established since joining the league in 1992. And for a while, Spurrier looked like his old Steve Superior "Told-ya-so" self when the Gamecocks opened 6-1 and were No. 6 in the country. Then, South Carolina fell apart and finished with five straight losses to end their chase and miss out on a bowl game. With the Gamecocks a few days off from opening the season against N.C. State on Thursday night, Spurrier won't guarantee much of anything about his team this season. "We're trying to stay a little bit underneath the radar, whatever you want to call it, about not trying to talk too big and, hopefully, let our play do whatever talking needs to be said," Spurrier said Sunday. "I don't know if we've got a really good team, an average team or what. I don't know yet," he said.

Thursday cannot come fast enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 25, 2008  07:35 AM ET

With Brinkley returning as the mainstay on defense and a decent showing by Munnerly and McKinley it should be an improvement on last season........I hope!

August 25, 2008  08:54 AM ET

I would say his silence is deafning. When have you ever heard Spurrier be so non-committal. I would fear the Gamecocks this year

August 25, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Agree Yard bird I cant wait for Thursday

August 25, 2008  09:42 AM ET

I can't wait for Thursday either but the Gamecocks have to beat the Wolfpack. NC State isn't that good.

August 25, 2008  11:25 AM ET

If they dont beat NCState by 20 they need to pack it up and not show up for any of their SEC games.

August 25, 2008  11:44 AM ET

It's just to bad that MICHIGAN took RR. Spurrier would have been the better pick, then RR and his street football crap.

August 25, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Spurrier keeps mum. That's a first.

August 25, 2008  01:01 PM ET

USC (not the real one in Cali, but the one referred to in this story) has done the tried and true, let's bring in top notch coaches so they can bump our program up to the top level. Spurrier and Holtz were both the second coming and would turn them into a top 10 program... Didn't happen cause the school sucks, the location of the school sucks, and why would anyone descent go play there when they can goto Florida, Georgia, FSU, Clemson or Miami?

August 25, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Oh, and Spurrier.... you can't spell Suck with USC :)

August 25, 2008  01:42 PM ET

clemson? full of inbreeding and hicks, who wants to go there? playing in the cakewalk acc doesn't get you much national exposure. bowden gets little out of the talent he recruits. clemson is also in the middle of nowhere....maybe that explains the inbreeding.

Oh, and Spurrier.... you can't spell Suck with USC :)

any thoughts on NC State being able to cover the 13 point spread?

August 25, 2008  03:33 PM ET

"yata yata yata, who cares about the carolina CAPONS. jerry"

Hey Jerry, shut the he** up with your negative comments. Anything substantive to say, it will be proved right or wrong on the field, but naive and unsubstantive comments like yours only serve to prove your stupidity.

"USC (not the real one in Cali, but the one referred to in this story)"

"IamRightYou AreWrong", do you mean the one that pays off it's players and their families, the one who's artificially-hyped recent alumni have gone on to to NOTHING in the NFL - see benched playboy Leinhart and can't-run Bush?

FYI, the University of South Carolina has been playing football longer than SoCal. so respect your daddy.

August 25, 2008  04:45 PM ET

That might be true about South Carolina playing longer than Southern Cal, but that's where the comparison ends. There's only ONE USC, and it's located in South (formerly South-Central) LA.

Apparently you dont remember the good ole Spurrier days when he was a winning coach at Florida and used to refer to Tenn by saying "You can't spell Citrus (as in the Citrus Bowl) without UT"

August 25, 2008  07:39 PM ET

Hey STRYDERUSA, Who are you to tell me to ****.A Full Growm CAPON Fan from "GOOSE CREEK" Get a grip. A real person doesn't live in a place called GOOSE CREEK. Oh maybe a CAROLINA CAPON would come from GOOSIE CREEK. That is so FUNNY, GOOSIE CREEK CAPONS. HA HA HA. GO N C STATE. jerry

August 25, 2008  08:39 PM ET

I hope South Carolina has a good season. I hope Steve Spurrier falls off of a cliff.

August 25, 2008  09:28 PM ET

Had to make a comment on this one. I hope USC does well this year. Spurrier should have them playing well soon enough.

As for the USC name discussion. South Carolina has been called USC for decades. Southern Cal has always until a few years ago been called SC. As any grad and they will tell you they graduated from SC. So when you want to make a statement like "the real USC" check your history first.

Anyway... SC is a power and has a rich history. I'm sure they will make it through their current injuries and have a great year as well. I expect they will once agian be crowned the PAC 10 Champ in '08.
