Ginobili reinjures left foot

Manu Ginobili did not suit up for Argentina's bronze-medal game against Lithuania at the Olympics on Sunday and said after the 87-75 victory that he was headed for San Antonio for more tests on the strained ligament in his left foot. It is the same injury that hobbled him at the end of the Spurs' season. He re-injured it during the first half of Friday's 101-81 loss to the United States in the semifinals. "It's a little messed up, but it will be fine," he said after the game. Ginobili tried several treatments on Saturday -- which he called "a very long day" -- but nothing worked. "I had some pain in it this morning, and icing it didn't help," he said.

He's got time now to rehab and rest, especially since the NBA regular season is irrelevant.

I would love to be around Popovich when he found out about this

August 25, 2008  08:17 AM ET

He promised that he will not aggrevate the injury more. You can't promise that if you are playing especially the way he plays. At least he has 4 years to rest the ankle before the next Olympics.

Too much flopping puts undue stress on the feet.

August 25, 2008  08:32 AM ET

He should have played for his country and he has plenty of time to recover... please ... non story..

August 25, 2008  08:36 AM ET

He would have injured it in the Olympics OR in the regular season - it was just a matter of which. Manu plays hard - all elbows and knees - and falls hard, too (yes, we all knows he flops sometimes too). Manu is all or nothing - he plays 110%. He would have aggravated that ankle within 10 games of preseason play. Can he have surgery to repair that?

August 25, 2008  08:41 AM ET

He will be fine.. yes.. it is something that can be corrected and fine before the season.

August 25, 2008  08:46 AM ET

There's no guarantee he would have got injured in the reg. season. If he would have rested his ankle the whole summer he probably would have been 100% by the time training camp opens. I have no problem with representing your country. But at some point, you have to decide what you really want to do. He already has a gold medal. And he's only 31. So it's possible he could have played in London. Kidd is 35 and he played this year..

I'm not disagreeing......but in reality
A nagging chronic condition + player getting older......
should = NOT PLAYING IN UNNECESSARY exhibitions

Ginobili has heart and he plays with reckless abandon. Pop knew that and he's probably not surprised about the injury.

Hopefully it doesn't become a chronic problem.

Hey Dwight......

The olympics were designed for AMATURE athletes.......
it has become all about MAKING $ on shirts, flags, etc....
why don't YOU get your head out of the sand and wake up-

and ps- YES I am born & raised an AMERICAN....and proud of it.
I just think it is STUPID for profesionals to play

Have the surgery and get it over with. Rehab and try to come back later in the season. The longer you wait, the worse it will be.

to athletes the olympics are everything. blood sweat and tears for years. all for one moment of glory. yes business has placed itself in the middle of this event but the story will always be how these athletes rose above the hardships to live out their dreams and become champions. JGB it is not an exhibition. no matter how you cut it

Wow... way to show your class there Dwight... do they execute people in Argentina for expressing their opinions? We all know how much worse off people are in America as opposed to living in the lap of Argentinian luxury, but in America we are entitled to our opinions

and what the hell does "PARTED" mean. If you mean partied well you expect that from a country that has nothing to get excited about on any given day. People like you make JESUS sick...

USA all the way!
