Will players cause labor unrest?

The fine print of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, crafted just three summers ago following the painful lockout of 2004-05, allows the players to terminate the deal after the upcoming season. With the rank and file guaranteed at least $1.22 billion in wages in 2008-09, the chance of a quick exit, stage left, is probably on par with someone in the rank and file breaking Wayne Gretzky's season scoring mark of 215 points. But if that lockout taught us anything, it's this: Anything is possible. "I haven't heard any strong opinion at this point from the players," said NHL Players Association boss Paul Kelly, asked what the sentiment was among the troops.

Lets see.. greed ... money ... I would have to say......yes.

The owners wanted a cap in place to police themselves and keep salaries at a decent amount. So they tied them in with the revenues. They made their bed now deal with it.

They all made their bed together, they should sleep on it!

This picture is just what Spiny wanted with his morning coffee....LOL

I thought the contracts are guaranteed.

August 25, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I thought signed contracts were legalling binding agreements isnt that what the players union and the NHL agreed too. This constant whining over this issue is becoming far too much like baseball. Iam begining to lose faith in Mr. Bettmans ability to run the NHL. It could really use a guy with an iron fist. Fans first !!

They are guaranteed..

I agree with darkstorm here, the owners and players all have to abide by the salary cap. Player greed has little to do with rising salaries and another potential lockout. Once again owners are throwing obscene money at free agents or RFAs (NYR). You can't really blame the player for "taking" the money offered to him. And once again the players will take most of the fault even though it has always been the GMs and owners who are offering and signing the contracts. There is onyl so much in the pot, if you want 1/4 of your salary cap tied up in one player live with the consequences.

August 25, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Why didn't Bettman stand up to speak at that podium?

August 25, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Here we go again, more NHL labor issues. Make a rule that calls for sensible contracts... 5-7 years at most. No more 15 year contracts like Rick DiPietro. That's a waste of money. That doesn't happen in the NBA or NFL, and they have salary caps. They aren't hard caps like the NHL, though. This whole thing is stupid. Structure the salary cap after the NBA, or follow the hard cap and make some other restrictions on spending.

Spiny Norman is late this morning. Or perhaps he died of excitement after seeing that photo of Bettman. Or the sight Bettman scared him to death.

I am still waiting on MLB to fire up a salary cap too... that would be nice.

Spiny announced he was going on vacation to Mass. for 2 weeks.
For his peace of mind it's probably better that he not see this......

Did all the chicks at that wedding like your hair? I bet you were popular.

Always, seabird. Always. Unfortunately, about the only one that I wasn't related to was the bride. But hey... Lifes a ****. Then you marry one. It's a vicious cycle.

The timing of this story is incredibly random. The labor deal doesn't expire for a year and there is virtually no talk whatsoever of problems currently. I think the writer just wanted to say 'rank and file'. He know it's 'union terminology' but he doesn't really have a clue what it actually means..

August 25, 2008  05:19 PM ET

Bettman is "good" enough to bring us another lockout in 2009-2010. No doubt about that!

August 25, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth for an INFERIOR sport !!!

The only "comedy" is the NHL disguised as as a major sport. You as a "BostonGM" should realize this more than most !!!

At last they have heart, passion and kick a*s! Unlike NBA where shooting sucks and traveling reigns and in MLB when players purposely tank plays (see Manny being Manny) and fatboys are atheletes. Try tanking a play in hockey and you'll meet your teeth up close and personal.

Jays Friend,

Get back to watching WWE and NASCAR.

Unfortunatrely a not so atypical and ignorant American sports fan. "I can't understand it so I ignore it and I can hide my ignorance by calling it inferior".
