Why Bears GM got emotional

Chris Williams said Sunday that the Bears knew of a pre-existing herniated disc in his lower back when they drafted him in April. The club says that is exactly right. An emotional general manager Jerry Angelo said the player's story jibes with everything he and the team have had to say since the offensive tackle went down on the second day of training camp with an injury.

How does Jerry Angelo keep his job?

August 25, 2008  08:03 AM ET

He kept Urlacher.

August 25, 2008  08:22 AM ET

Jerry Angelo is an idiot! Why would you waste a first round pick on damaged goods? What is the exchange policy? Can they return him to the NCAA for a new tackle? Per the Urlacher standard, Williams stands to make a great deal of money for having a bad back!

How about a FIRED Jerry Angelo got emotional when told he lost his job for incompetence and stupidity?

He knew the guy had a herniated disk and went ahead anyway thus throwing away a draft pick for this guy when he could've pick another player to fill a number of holes on this team? Un-effing-believable!

August 25, 2008  09:35 AM ET

wow, if this is true, i'm surprised heads aren't rolling. well nm it is the bears after all.

August 25, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Only in Chicago is this level of ineptenss and incompetence accepted and rewarded year in and year out! Jerry Angelo's scrotum should be nailed to the locker room door! Oh! Wait! That won't work! Jerry Angelo doesn't have any balls!

August 25, 2008  10:06 AM ET

At least JA decided not to keep lying about not knowing Williams had a back problem -- that would have been worse. If Williams heals up and becomes All-Pro than everything will be kind of OK.

August 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I love Jerry Angelo as the Bears' GM. Than again I am a Packer fan.

August 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

The guy could be a good player for ten years. A little early to say it was a bad call yet. See how he rehabs. If a top pick broke his leg in the pre season you would be in the same boat...

Man, I hope you're right! But I wouldn't put a herniated disk in the same category as a broken leg, though!

Thank you, diva! We, Bears fans, can use all the TLC we can get these days!

August 25, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Is he emotional because he feels sorry for himself for drafting this guy?

August 25, 2008  11:08 AM ET

This is a wasted draft pick and should be the end of Angelo. To draft a player knowing that the herniated disc could potentially give trouble - and how is that unlikely with a defensive lineman? - is the definition of incompetence. The BEARS could have had Cherilus, Otah, or Baker and took this guy whose aggressiveness was in question anyway. There will be nothing but medical issues with this guy who, as a Vanderbilt grad, can make his way quite nicely out of football. Angelo MUST go.

Chris has character and talent. I think he'll be worth the wait. I just hope he doesn't end up like Columbo.

Urlacher still played better than 80% of the linebackers int he league with a hurt back last year. The only reason he didn't make the pro bowl was because of the popular vote and having told everyone about his back bothering him.

What we're talking about here is a GM who drafted as his No. 1 a guy who had a bad back to begin with, not an Urlacher who's been in the league for a number of year and has been banged up. Any fool knows you dont draft a guy who should be playing hard on opening day at his position, especially if he's a Round 1 pick. (That's what Cherilus will be doing.) So what's this cr ap about "worth the wait"? This is Angelo's fault and isn't his first mistake.
