Mets may shut down Maine

John Maine should know this week if he'll be pitching again this year. Maine is slated to start Friday, but a bone spur in his shoulder has put his season in jeopardy. Jerry Manuel said yesterday the team will decide this week whether Maine will make Friday's start, indicating if Maine isn't deemed able to go, he likely would not pitch again this season. "I think if we do [rest him], I would think it would be a complete shutdown," Manuel said. Should that happen, it would be a tough Mets injury, drastically damaging their rotation. Asked about possible replacements, Omar Minaya mentioned Brian Stokes as well as minor leaguers Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Nelson Figueroa.

First! In your face JR!

Sucks to be him. And btw, since I haven't chimed in lately on anything, Jerry Manuel is a decent manager, but I seem to remember a less than stellar history in Chicago. What was it? One winning season? I'd take Ozzie over Jerry anyday.

BWAAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAH. Good. I hope his career is in jeopardy too.

If they consider him part of their future.. yeah.. better be on the side of caution.

You haven't seen me toss out Rollins getting his face bytchslapped by a baseball a few years back right although that image is everywhere have you?? Did you hear me rip Rollins for taking 5 weeks off with his ankle this year?

For a short time, you were a somewhat reasonable Philly fan. Now its pretty obvious you're exactly what the folks throwing you a beating on this site have been saying.

August 25, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Whatever happens if the Mets don't win the division it won't be because of Maine it will be because of the shyte bullpen Minaya trots out there. Conversely, if the Phils don't win the division, it will be because of the shyte plate approach of the team.

Either way, it's going to be fun and painful.

Philly fans are way too optimistic about a Mets collapse, a collapse like that does not come along every year, you better plan on earning it, if you can.

AllStarz | 08/25/08, 10:24 AM

Well, this makes zero sense. You have to have a large lead for a collapse to happen first of all. The Phillies are 1/2 game back...so you mean if they win the division the Mets collapsed? Joke. Also, to your comment about earning it, I'm pretty sure the Philles won the games they needed to last season, including 9 straight over the Mets, so as much of a collapse was given, the division was also earned. So basically, what I'm trying to say here is, you aren't very knowledgeable when it comes to this topic. You should be fined for posting something so outlandish.

Who cares really. With or without Maine, this division is going down to the end. Its good they've both finally pushed each other to play better over the last few weeks. I just wish they had more than the 5 games left against each other.

The only given is the Marlins are done. Although that team scares me as a Mets fan in the next few years.

Agreed. You would think the schedule makers would've had more meeting in to close out the year. The Marlins could be scary but they notoriously will either be all in or dump stars, so we'll see. They'll def be on spoiler alert again this year for sure.

August 25, 2008  11:04 AM ET

*more meetings to close out the year....dunno what happened there brain fart I guess

August 25, 2008  11:09 AM ET

If I were a Philly fan, I'd probably get Joe Morgan's home address and beat him to within an inch of his life with a rolled up, wet, Sunday edition of the NYTimes for ALWAYS calling Rollins, RAWLINGS or ROLLINGS. And Jon Miller the the pimp daddy shirts has got to go.

I don't think anyone expects a Mets collapse. Mets have never been in a position this year to have a collapse. I will be a fight to the end, no doubt.
