Kidd 'retires' with 56-0 record

Jason Kidd retired Sunday. From USA Basketball competition, not his job with the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he is entering the final season of his $20 million-a-year contract. There is no better way for Kidd to bow out of international basketball, having earned his second gold medal Sunday while extending his record to 56-0 in Olympics, Olympic qualifying and exhibition games. "I'm undefeated," Kidd, 35, said. "I told them I can retire now from international ball, but LeBron [James] threw out something I didn't like. He said he won't play in 2012 unless I'm there." During the team news conference after the United States' 118-107 victory over Spain on Sunday, James suggested a slightly different scenario: "J-Kidd is going to become a player-coach now," he announced. The Mavericks probably just hope that after spending the last month playing and practicing with Team USA, Kidd can get sufficient rest before training camp starts in October under new coach Rick Carlisle.

I was a naysayer of Jason Kidd on Team USA before but this guy helped set the pace and played the role of distributer PERFECTLY. Kudos to Mr. Colangelo.

August 25, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Jason Kidd knows how to play team ball. He's not Stephon Marbury who doesn't know how to get his team involved. Kidd doesn't need or want to score. That's a great trait for a PG

August 25, 2008  08:30 AM ET

JKidd was a quiet leader for this team. Just by being there, he really pumped up the other players. He is not about individual accomplishment but teamwork mentallity. He is about getting everybody involved. But he will problems in the NBA. Players don't respect his shooting anymore. He can shoot but he needs to get his confidence to shoot. What he can do is that he can still create and penetrate. His leadership quality will be his main strength for the MAVS.

Kidd Giving Gold Medal To Wynn's Wife

Aug 24, 2008 12:56 PM EST
Elaine Wynn, who is married to casino owner Steve Wynn, was promised by Jason Kidd that he would give her his newest Olympic medal if the Americans won the gold.

"It's not a (gambling) marker or anything like that," Kidd told The Arizona Republic. "She's just a great friend and a really great person."

They met last year when Kidd and the USA team stayed at the Wynn while training in Las Vegas.

"Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks," Kidd said. "We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game.

"I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do."

THIS IS HOW MUCH OF A T0SS HE GIVES ABOUT A GOLD MEDAL

Could kidd have LA!D the smackdown on her or was he getting advice from kryobe on how to buy your way out of trouble (after waving the wand around the h0es) or even he may have had shaq on his mind after from some unknown cell phone calls with heavy breathing down the line

team USA is all class, give kidd a medal for his gesture

August 25, 2008  09:51 AM ET

He's timing this perfectly. I think they needed his leadership, but his game is shot. His next move should be to retire from the NBA and seek a coaching gig.

Jason Kidd has had a solid career. He probably isn't going to get a ring but a lot of great players left the game without a ring.

It shouldn't be an indictment of their career.

Amen HOVA. Somehow the media has managed to plant in the minds of a lot of people that one player is better than another because he has a ring. Frankly I hate the argument. Some of the best to ever play the game, left without a ring.

August 25, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Hova-
I agree. a 1st ballot HOF'er....no douobt
BUT
the only thing ....in my opinon.....not getting a ring does is -
keeps you out of the debate as to whether you are one of the greatest (top 5) of all time - I just thnk that you can't be included in the discussion -

August 25, 2008  10:20 AM ET

players like kidd dont get rings because of lousy GM's, or in some cases when jesus comes down and inhabits the body of a human (MJ23)

August 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

kidd equals great baller and woman brawler (classy guy)

giving away your gold medal is a disgrace and he didnt deserve to suit up with an attitude like that

August 25, 2008  10:27 AM ET

they only picked him (pass first PG) because team USA had enough shooters or ball hogs if you will - so he fit the teams chemistry

?
Why not? A ring is simply an indication of the people you were surrounded with. That's a stupid argument. Are you going to say that Karl Malone or Charles Barkley are not two of the best to ever play the position, because Brian Scalabrine has a ring. The argument is baseless.

August 25, 2008  10:49 AM ET

he now retires, how old is he anyway like 50 or something

August 25, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Jason Kidd is washed up, sorry to say. he is not the force he once was in the NBA. He is still ok but definitely not a marquee player. maybe not even a starter.

August 25, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I hope I am right on this one, but the Olympics have changed something in our young NBA talent. I have never seen some of the players displaying such heart at home in the league.

Anthony, I thought, played his heart out. Kobe showed as a huge and an unselfish superstar. LeBron grew up in front of our eyes. I am proud of those guys.

i guess you havent watched him play the last couple of years. has he lost a step? sure he is like 34. everyone starts to slow down, but to say "maybe not even a starter." that is just ridiculos!!! he averaged 11 pt, 10 ast, 7.5 rbs and a steal and a hlf a game last year. thats not to bad. and i say he will be this year than last year ni dallas. avery wasnt a good coach for him and they are going to go to a more of an up tempo offense which he thrives in.

August 25, 2008  11:16 AM ET

I was skeptical too but JKidd calm this team down win they needed it!! Big leadership from Kidd and witthout him they woudve lost!!!
