Chiefs GM's job on the line

For the first time in his career, Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson enters a season in which the prevailing wisdom at Arrowhead Stadium is this: How the team performs will determine whether he keeps his job. Peterson insists he's never heard so much as a whisper that he's a general manager whose legacy -- and tenure -- could come to a close after this season. Sources say Arrowhead is so rife with speculation that Peterson is on the hot seat that people discuss the end of his career over lunches, at the coffee pot and in hushed tones in hallways and meeting rooms. That talk has spilled into the NFL at large, from people in rival front offices to agents and even other players.

I wouldn't stop there. They will be looking for a new head coach too. I would put money on Wade Phillips after Dallas lets releases him at the end of the year or Spagnuola if he holds that Giants defense together.

Herm Edwards needs to go back to coordinating, I agree. But yes, the GM needs to go soon.

August 25, 2008  09:01 AM ET

I wouldnt stop there either.. they need to be looking for a new QB and some youth at RB and a new O-Line..

Let me just go over this for people that are Non-Chief fans or don't follow the Chiefs. As a Chiefs fan, I despise Carl Peterson as GM of KC. All Chief fans do. He has run down the Chiefs organization. All he cares about is making him and the Hunt's money. He is arrogant and pompous. We are dreaming of the day he isn't GM of the Chiefs.

August 25, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I like Herm but if he doesn't get it done he's gone.

The Chiefs have great fans, they deserve a team with better players on it.

August 25, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Dolphins shut them out hahhaha .

August 25, 2008  10:13 AM ET

The Chiefs are in rebuilding mode right now and at least two years out of contention. Give Peterson and Edwards a shot before giving them the boot. Young players take time to develop. Look at how Cleveland finally had it come together last year after they gave the GM and coach another year.

Boy, does Larry Johnson look stupid in that picture or what!

Hands down, Larry. The fans are not gonna shoot ya.

We've given Carl Peterson 14 extra years on his so-called "Five Year Super Bowl Plan". He came here in 1988. We haven't won in the playoffs since 1994. We gave him every chance to make our Chiefs a winner and all he cares about is ticket sales. The Chiefs are in the top 5 for season ticket prices--guess who's in front of us? Patriots, Colts, Cowboys and I think the Steelers. All of those teams have had very successful championship seasons and my beloved Chiefs haven't won the Super Bowl since January 1970. Peterson is a disgrace and all you people who think he needs two more years and think he's a great GM, YOU'RE AN IDIOT. BRING BACK MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER.

If Clark Hunt has some balls, he should fire Carl. Be a man and live up to your father's name and make our Chiefs team great. We have a devoted fan base and we deserve better.

What took so long?

August 25, 2008  02:26 PM ET

This should of happen along time ago and take herm w/ him....

August 25, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Who cares about the Chiefs GM? I'm more concerned with Larry Johnson's picture up there....

Obviously the NFL's crackdown on flashing gang signs has made Larry Johnson revert to something more classic than the Rocafella symbol.... The Moose Antlers! Forget the Bunny Ears, this man is taking it up a notch!

"Because I'm slime my jobs on the line" !!!

August 25, 2008  06:38 PM ET

losing games like they have been lately will cause some job insecurity.

To: Carl Peterson
From: A concerned Chiefs fan in New Jersey

Carl - Be honest with yourself. You've had more than enough time to put together a Super Bowl contending team. Be a man and resign. The Chiefs' faithful will respect you for doing so and let you ride off into the sunset in peace. Who knows, maybe you can land a gig with the Raiders or Redskins?
