Dodgers moving Andruw to 1B?

Andruw Jones had played 1,835 games in the major leagues and another 324 games in the minor leagues without ever playing first base. Until Saturday night, that is. Jones, on a rehabilitation assignment at triple-A Las Vegas, played first base -- at his request. The Dodgers invested $36 million in Jones as a center fielder. Yet the club management and training staff approved his request, deciding the risk of injury at an unfamiliar position did not warrant holding him out of the lineup. "That's what we obviously balanced," General Manager Ned Colletti said Sunday. "His knee wasn't feeling as good as he wanted, but he didn't want to sit out another day." Jones, on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his left knee, arrived in Las Vegas nine days ago and played three games before stepping into a hole in the outfield and irritating his surgically repaired right knee. Las Vegas could not use the designated hitter Saturday, in a game between National League affiliates, so Jones persuaded club officials to let him return to the lineup at first base, saying his movements would be limited there and that he had played the position on occasion in spring training with the Atlanta Braves.

They should move him to the pine.

August 25, 2008  07:43 AM ET

Move him to the unemployment line.

August 25, 2008  07:54 AM ET

Agree with both of the above. The Braves dumped this guy at precisely the right time.

/agreed

See the Dodgers messed up when they kicked those two lesbians out of the stadium a few years back. Everybody knows Andruw enjoys some "good lesbian action". He would probably be playing better if he could look up and see a couple of chicks making out in the stands.

"Jones is batting .385 in four games at Las Vegas, with two home runs and two strikeouts in 13 at-bats."

Sounds like Las Vegas has found their center fielder.

Er, first baseman.

August 25, 2008  09:03 AM ET

How much CRACK has General Manager Ned Colletti been smoking. How can anyone have signed this stiff to a 2 year 36 mil. contract. Amazing!!!!!!!!

August 25, 2008  09:33 AM ET

I would like to see this guy get close to his glory days in ATL.. I'm sure he is putting in the extra work but I think it's mental with him at the plate. We he is in the box he is trying to pull every thing. He is pulling off fastballs during a fastball count.......kinda sad.

August 25, 2008  10:10 AM ET

I'm not ready to give up on him but he's definitely a DH player now. Too bad he's stuck in the NL where he's going to have to move to 1st base due to his ballooning weight and lack of mobility.

August 25, 2008  10:22 AM ET

They should just trade Jones to whoever will take him and for whatever they'll trade him for. The Dodgers would be happy with a bucket of balls. Jones is making $22 million next year, a bit steep for a guy who is hitting under .200 over the past two years.

August 25, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I think he was a roid/hgh guy.......no facts- just my opinion
you don't just fall off the earth naturally
and you CERTAINLY don't go from a low 30 hr guy to a 50+ hr guy in one season....that's almost a 50% improvement

August 25, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Whaqt a horrible signing.....I have no idea what they were thinking, because Andruw has obviously been declining for a couple of years.

Now they are just stuck with his salary. I can't imagine his lard-butt playing first base in the big leagues.

August 25, 2008  10:34 AM ET

jgb.. Andruw never looked like a steroid guy to me.. he was never in particularly good shape at any point in his career. He was kinda skinny when he came into the league.. then he started getting a little pudgy.. now he's fat

bigdog1002 | 08/25/08, 10:34 AM

yeah but palmerio never looked like he did riods either. so you never know. but i agree jones is a lazy player after he got his contract. it looks like he has gained at least 20 to 30 lbs in the last couple of years.

they should have moved him to a corner outfield spot or put a clause in his contract that he couldnt weigh over a certain amount like the red sox did with schilling.

August 25, 2008  10:56 AM ET

I don't think Andruw did steroids, but I agree we'll never know..... but that's not his problem..... it's not like he developed warning track power all of the sudden..... he just got really fat and started striking out 40 pct of the time...... I believe the real issue is that he's a few years older than he says he is..... If he's really 33/34, then that's a normal age to decline absent steroids.....

August 25, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I was ticked off at Kenny Williams when he didn't sign Andruw. Now he looks like a genius for this move and some of his other moves he made or didn't make.

It looks like he's shooting streiods into his gut. He was going downhill before they signed him so I can't quite understand why they did it.

August 25, 2008  11:14 AM ET

the reason he 'only' got his 2yr deal was he was AWFUL his walk year.

I thnk we're all agreed he's a fat pig....
but it is the precipitous jumps & drops - in this day & age-
that is a red flag to me

Trade him to the Royals for Alex Gordon.
