Speculation surrounds O's starter

If Baltimore Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera is pitching through an injury, he isn't saying a word. But on Sunday, the struggling right-hander's performance fueled speculation about his health. Once again, Cabrera suffered problems with his velocity and the New York Yankees took advantage, tagging the pitcher for seven runs en route to an 8-7 victory that completed a three-game sweep. However, when asked directly if he was injured Cabrera offered little insight. "I don't have an answer for that question right now," he said. And when questioned about the lack of velocity on his fastball -- which started at 88 mph and topped out at 92 mph -- Cabrera was equally vague. "No comment for that one either," he said.

First! In your face JR!

1 word: ambiguous.

August 25, 2008  08:54 AM ET

if he is hurt he needs to let someone know before he seriously hurts someone. leading the league in hit batters isn't anything to be proud of.

August 25, 2008  10:07 AM ET

His velocity isn't the problem...it's his aim!!!!!!!

He can't throw strikes @ 96, 92.88 or 40 I'm betting. Going for that most walks/most hit batters crown will take a severe shot if he goes on DL!

He is the guy who hit Jeter on the hand. I will never forgive him.

With how terrible this team is, FanNation needs to get its biggest Oriole fan Gu3 warming up in the bully as he couldnt do any worse.

August 25, 2008  04:39 PM ET

he doesn't hit batters because he's hurt

he hits batters because he's a head hunter

August 25, 2008  04:53 PM ET

We (and we being baltimore) pay D-Cab to throw hard.. we complain about his locationand he brings his velocity down... and now hes no differnt than anyone else who can throw a 90 mph fastball with no movement.. we (being baltimore) rather him throw the ball 99 mph and be wild.. he will get more outs that way.

When you are the Orioles - when you can't see any light at the end of the tunnell - basically when you stink - shut dowm one of your few commodities for the year !!! WHAT A SHEETY ORGANIZATION !!!

"With how terrible this team is"

The Orioles are 6 games under .500 in the toughest division in baseball - I can think of quite a few teams that are more "terrible" than the Orioles (especially when the Orioles were forecasted to be one of the worst teams in the majors before the season began).

I'm not an Orioles fan, but I do follow the AL East and have noticed the progress the Orioles have made under Andy McPhail. Despite years of mismanagement, they now seem to have a clear plan for the future and have done a nice job of restocking their farm system (especially with the ridiculously one-sided fleecing of the Mariners in the Erik Bedard trade). Feel free to research the franchise - you may be surprised with what you find.

Saeshawn - I agree with your comments - the Orioles lack of starting pitching has killed them this season - in addition, they don't even have a AAA shortstop in their organization much less one of major league caliber - they are still a couple of pitchers away but 6 games under .500 isnt awful in their division, especially with the pitching that they have run out there each night

Thank you saeshawn for saying what I was thinking. It just shows that some people (i'm talking to you, Jay's Friend) don't know much about baseball. After many years of poor basebal, they are on their way back to being a respected team. Anyone who believes otherwise is suffering from blind faith.

Listen my well-intentioned friend - I have been a fan and student of baseball since the 50's. I played college ball and some minor league. When I see the Orioles I see a team that really has no base for the long haul. Sure they are playing OK right now, but, the east is not the "toughest" division in baseball as Saeshawn stated. They have a few steady players on the rise - Markakis and Sheldon but come on do you think they are going to do anything witk Payton, Millar or even Huff (even though he's having a career year ) no SS or a below average catcher and mediocre pitching ??? They are a second rate team in a weak (this year) eastern division !!!

Rather than rely on my own personal opinion, I looked for concrete, independent stats to confirm my assertion that the AL East is the toughest division in baseball. According to ESPN stats, all 5 teams in the AL East are in the top 12 (out of 30) in the league in RPI (with the Rays and the Red Sox in positions 1 and 3 respectively) - with an average ranking much higher than the next highest ranked division. Even more impressive, all 5 teams are in the top 6! (out of 30) in terms of strength of schedule.

Back on topic - if Cabrera is legitimately hurt, it will hurt the already (admittedly) thin Orioles pitching rotation. Cabrera has shown flashes of greatness, but not the consistency. Overall, though, he's not a terrible option as a 4th or 5th started when you consider he usually gives 9-12 wins and 150+ innings.

That guy is dangerous. Someone will retaliate sooner or later.

August 26, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Hey Kaycee6, Mr. Baseball Expert - Who the hell is this player 'Sheldon' that is 'on the rise'?

August 26, 2008  12:23 PM ET

No base for the long haul??? Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Matt Weiters? Keep in mind, we're talking about REBUILDING here. Yeah, they're in last place, 18 games out of first. Did anyone expect them to have the record they have now? Nope. They were projected to lose 100 games or more by everyone.

Give credit where it's due. After years of Angelos tearing apart their minor league system, he's finally given away some power to McPhail, who is working faster than I and most O's fans expected him to.

I normally don't answer to sarcastic comments but here goes -1) I never said I was an expert (see above) and 2) I was thinking of Sherrill when I printed Sheldon - OK ??? Sorry I made a mistake not everyone is as perfect (LOL) as you !!!
