Clark leading Penn State race?

Penn State still has not announced who will start at quarterback for Saturday's season opener against visiting Coastal Carolina. The official depth chart, released yesterday, lists the first-string quarterback as either Daryll Clark or Pat Devlin, which has been the case since spring practice. Team sources said Clark, a senior, likely would start and that Devlin, a redshirt sophomore out of Downingtown East, probably would get nearly equal playing time, at least in the first game.

I hope we play both of them. Clark will take the first snap. We are!

August 26, 2008  07:02 AM ET

No more Morelli, woo hoo!

August 26, 2008  08:22 AM ET

I wonder if Joe can actually tell them apart if they were out of their jerseys?

August 26, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Morelli didn't set the bar too high, either one will be a great improvement.

August 26, 2008  09:06 AM ET

No surprise here. Clark is a great athlete and he is also the senior. Maybe Joe Pa sees him in the Michael Robinson mode. Robinson lead the Nittany Lions to the Orange Bowl against FSU (I think they won that game too).

August 26, 2008  09:49 AM ET

They did, I dont think they get to a BCS game this year though, I thinking Outback or Cap One

August 26, 2008  10:13 AM ET

I agree xxx84xxx. The Capital One Bowl or The Outback Bowl are two good January 1 games.

August 26, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Let JoePa get a good year 8 wins and a bowl win, then let him go in the history books and move on...

August 26, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Joe has done this before. Coastal Carolina is a good place to see how each will play in a "real" game.

August 26, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Coastal may surprise some people. They only I-AA they have had trouble with the past few years is App State, and we saw what they can do to Big-10 teams.

August 26, 2008  02:32 PM ET

I disagree 84. I think Penn State we'll make a solid run for the Big 10 as a #2 finish with no more than 2 losses[OSU & maybe Wisconsin]. I don't see 4 losses on the map. Even with 2 losses Penn State could sill be in the Rose...assuming Ohio State is playing the Orange...what's great about it is Penn State is going to field a pretty solid football team[16 returning starters] this year and no one is giving them respect and attention. Perfect!...assume nothing in the Big 10 as anything can happen... WE ARE!!!!

August 26, 2008  03:01 PM ET

I dont think PSU will have a bad year, I think they are solid on defense, as usual. Offense is a question mark, I dont know much about who ya have back there. I think you could potentially have a great year like 05 or have a 5 loss campaign, depends on how you guys deal with adversity. I hope PSU does well, as with the rest of the Big Ten just not when they play OSU, LOL

August 26, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Penn State's offensive and defensive lines will be crucial to their success. If they stay healthy all season...watch out. This team could make a run at OSU and the Badgers. The quarterback position is key for obvious reasons but without a solid offensive line neither of these untested QB's will do anything. Same thing on defense. Secondary is weaker than the last couple years and the linebackers - with the loss of Sean Lee - need a solid D-Line to clog it up and create havoc for opposing QB's. Again, if healthy, PSU's depth and strength is right there...and really, nobody in the Big Ten looks better than PSU on paper. We shall see.

Really? Thats a bold statement.....

August 26, 2008  03:18 PM ET

I think OSU, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan St. might beg to differ...

August 26, 2008  03:19 PM ET

xxx84xx

I was only referring to the O-Line's and D-Line's.

August 26, 2008  03:26 PM ET

ok, I was like da.mn that takes some balls to throw that one out there.

August 26, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Takes more balls to be an Ohio State fan this year. I mean, 12-0 season and another loss in the BCS title game is frankly more devastating than a 2 loss season if you ask me. Especially if you guys get wood-shedded like you did the previous two years.

August 26, 2008  03:39 PM ET

Yeah no kiddin, but anything less than an undefeated season with a bowl win, and people will be saying, "we told you they sucked", I guess its a no win.

Oh well I'll enjoy it no matter what happens!

Where is the Morelli lad these days? Is he working at Arnold's?
