Bryan Berard, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 NHL draft, gallantly battled back from a 2000 injury that nearly blinded his right eye. On Sept. 20, he will be among the defensemen competing for a job when the Flyers open training camp, general manager Paul Holmgren said yesterday.

Give the guy credit for coming back from that injury. Coulda and probably shoulda ended his career. Hockey isn't a sport I'd think you would wanna play with one good eye.

August 26, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Best of luck to him...not to the Flyers though...just him.

August 26, 2008  08:53 AM ET

He hates the musical group, One eye blind.
Don't imagine he's too fond of Hossa either.
------
I also think that the Number 4 should be retired right across the NHL!
It's long overdue!
Maybe Berard thinks its 44 and can only see half of it.
Homgren should re-think signing Bryan, afterall, with the injuries this team suffers Bryan is a high risk. All Holmgren has to do is look back to last season...and with hindsight being 20/20...oh never mind. Bryan is the exception to that rule.

It is a real shame. I remember watching him live when the Leafs came to Buffalo after the trade and this kid could skate like the wind. He had his defensive deficiencies, but paired with Kaberle, I was excited that the Leafs had two smooth-as-silk puck movers who could join the rush and create so much excitement from the back-end. All of that changed in a split-second.

He has tried valiantly to keep his career going, and it is a small miracle a guy can play the fastest sport in the world with one eye... but obviously he is a mere shell of his former self.

Good luck Mr. Berard.

Very classy Baun-ded.

Hey, let's make fun of the guy that has a physical disability! You're a ****.

August 26, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Heads up!!

August 26, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Just think what could've been if Bryan didn't suffer that injury! Lesser men would've quit a long time ago! Gotta admire his courage and determination. The guy has balls!

August 26, 2008  10:14 AM ET

It's great that he came back, but he simply can't defend anymore.

August 26, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Nice comments from the Leafs' fans (Baun-ded and Peter G). I guess you can throw stones since he's no longer playing in Toronto. You guys are as classy as the team you root for.

Me a leaf fan? I'd rather cut my wrists with a screwdriver...

August 26, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Sorry Peter, I thought you were one of the clones.

August 26, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Gives new meaning to the ole one eye...

August 26, 2008  11:35 AM ET

What? Class-less people on the T&R forums? My god I have never heard anything like it!

I try to ignore all the classless morons on the hockey T&R, but it's hard since 75% or so are regulars..

August 26, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Baun-ded... #4 should absolutely be retired, along with #77 and #9. That was below the belt, though.

Good luck to him, hope he makes it. I had almost forgotten about Berard. He was a really good player just coming into his own when he was injured.

August 26, 2008  11:48 AM ET

So we can now say my loser Islanders are not bringing him back. Berard would be inspiration and strong on the PP for my Islanders.
Dear God up above, how do we have our back-up goaltender as our GM???

It's third eye blind.

It's third eye blind.

Know it all

Hey Einstein, I think he knew that.......Mr. Baun-ded has a well-honed sense of humor.

Dashiva

I resemble that remark......

Obviously you guys dont know that Brain-ded was kidding. Berard does not play D. Thats the only bad thing i can say about him. I wouldnt care if he had 3.5 eyes and 3 arms or 1/2 a eye. He does'nt play D. I guess he could be used solely on the PP. He's a 2nd tier version of McCabe.

Exactly.

Hey...little non-avatar ****...too bad I missed you earlier...I think your comment is a little "short-sighted" and obviously you would have realized that my comment had a great deal of foresight before I scribed it. I think you have the vision of a rhino and the intellect of a winged micro-organism infested "Buzz"ing Diptera.
