Tigers want to trade Rogers

If a trade involving Tigers left-hander Kenny Rogers is going to happen before the end of this season, it likely will occur within the next several days. The deadline to set postseason rosters is Sunday, and multiple officials from other teams believe the Tigers will consider trading Rogers before then. The Tigers placed Rogers -- and several other players -- on trade waivers Friday. By this afternoon, the team will know which of them cleared waivers and which were claimed. If Rogers clears waivers, he could be traded to any team. If Rogers is claimed, the Tigers could attempt to work out a deal with the claiming club.

Unfortunately, Rogers isn't on the list of "young pitchers in the minors locked up for too many years for too many millions list", but hey it would be a start.

Replenish the farm, salvage something!

It's possible we could get something for him but for a pitcher that has gone 1-5 in his last 6 it's hard to imagine what would really come in for him. Alot needs to go but as proven with Matt Joyce, our farm system wasn't as decimated as people thought. And by mid to late next year we could have Porcello up as well. But we still need to unload quite a bit and get alot younger. Now that Miggy is hitting like he was supposed to and he is comfortible it's time to start building around younger guys like him, Granderson, Verlander, ect.

With the Tigers bullpen as lousy as it is, why not put Rogers there? He'd pitch a lot better knowing he's only going to be throwing 2-3 innings in relief. As a starter, he's barely making it past four innings anyway. They still have some very good arms in there system, but most of them are in A ball (Lakeland or West Michigan). Like A Fact stated, they'd wouldn't get much for Rogers anyway.

We aren't going to get much for him. His best interest would be to retire and become a pitching coach. He just doesn't have it anymore.

Kenny almost ALWAYS has a 1-2-3 first inning. The man could easily close for us- I know Rodney has been stable for the moment, but Kenny could close easily- the man is that intense and like that kinda pressure. I think a bullpen jog for him would be awesome.

Amen.

If Dombrowski could only change one thing about this team this off season, it would HAVE to be chuck. Get rid of him before Bonderman and Verlander turn into Dontrelle and Freddy.

August 26, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Lets see... overpaid.. overaged guy who clearly struggles staying healthy....good luck with that. I am sure some teams will be hard up and take a chance....sad.

I think at least Chuck needs to go this off season. Maybe even Lloyd as well casue there is little consistency with the hitters either.

August 26, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Tigers should have folded him earlier.
Can't see much of a market for this guy. how many more years is he under contract for?

August 26, 2008  09:49 AM ET

If he were pitching decently lately, that would be one thing.....but since he's not, I can't imagine the Tigers will get much for him.

August 26, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Time to fold em, Kenny.

August 26, 2008  10:21 AM ET

I would hate to see him leave the organization. Keeping him in the bullpen as a closer is a great idea, and hire him as a pitching coach for next season. The minor league guys could really learn from him.

August 26, 2008  10:27 AM ET

If the Tigers do not plan on signing him next season then why not move him now. He has several incentive clauses that are about to kick in when he reaches specific innings pitched milestones. Unfortunately the one team that could really use Kenny wouldn't dare go there again. I am referring to his disastrous stint with the Mets some years ago. Met fans still remember the bases loaded walk. I know I do. Kenny did a fine job for the Tigers but it is time to move him???..if the Tigers don???t plan on re-signing him next season.

Much agreed brother.

that is a great idea.. he is a good resourse for some young pitching.. maybe they should send him down now and he can help out D-train

It will only help D-Train if Kenny brings a shrink with him as well.

The Tigers will only get something for Rogers if they throw in the pine tar. Kenny Rogers sans pine tar will only net maybe one minor leaguer.
