Cards coach: Leinart still No. 1 QB

Every Monday during football season, the Cardinals' starting quarterback stands on a podium beneath a shade tree to address reporters at the team's Tempe training complex. So, the question of just who is the team's starting quarterback was answered - for now - when Matt Leinart stood beneath the tree. "It's still the same," Leinart said Monday of his status. "Nothing has changed," coach Ken Whisenhunt echoed. But doubts linger after an ESPN report on Sunday that quoted an unnamed "team source" that not only said Kurt Warner would replace Leinart, but also criticized Leinart's performance level and arm strength. Whisenhunt indicated that he did not know the identity of the source and said he was unaware of anybody on the Cardinals staff who talked on the matter. Whisenhunt added, however, that Leinart needs to improve his level of play.

hmmm, confused.......which is it?

Based on what he did last year ( 89.7) QB rating and all, Warner deserves to start until someone out plays him. Not sure that has happened yet.

Warner's gonna be the starter. Whisenhunt probably doesn't want to hurt poor Matt's confidence anymore than it already is..

August 26, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Yes, 50 year et al. but I was sure it was gonna be Matt despite Warner's perormance then the 3 ints in six pass performance. I am confused. Whisenhut is smart and manic, I think. So watch out.

Warner will start and be more effective... until he gets banged up again that is...

August 26, 2008  08:43 AM ET

This franchise is one of the worst in the NFL. they give Detroit a run for worst ever.

Matt Leinart is a bust. He'll be unemployed in two years, and it seems Vince Young might be a bust, but then ag he doesn't have any good receivers to utilize.

Simple, start Warner until he gets hurt, then you let Matty play if he's not too busy drinking with underage college girls

That last part might be kind of hard. USC started classes yesterday. I think Leinart saw the movie Van Wilder one too many times personally.

leinart sucks and u know it...haha looks like we did take best player in draft after all! go Super Mario!

August 26, 2008  09:14 AM ET

I agree Warner probally is the best fit now but they will have to decide within the next year if Matt is their future and allow him to run the team even if he is not the best overall... kinda like the packers decision

August 26, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Leinert is a bust. His arm strength and dedication have been questioned, and he hasn't done a thing to discount them. If he can't beat out washed-up Kurt Warner, then he doesn't have anywhere near the makings of a franchise QB. This guy is all hype and no results.

Typical Cards draft pick.

August 26, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Leinart is No. 1 hot tubbin' dude as well.

August 26, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Funny how the Draft Pundits all said Leinart was the most "NFL ready" QB in that draft. Evidently they meant "ready to hold the clipboard".

August 26, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I am not sure I would say he is a bust. Until you give him the ball and say "you have a complete season". Who knows?

August 26, 2008  09:40 AM ET

#1 scrub, LOL.

August 26, 2008  09:42 AM ET

I agree with that Drj. Leinart, because of injury mostly, hasn't been given a full season to show what he can do. I am disappointed in Whisenhunt not naming Kurt the starter, because I think this team is better in 2008 with Warner running the show. However, I don't think Leinart can be labeled a bust yet.

Hopefully, Whisenhunt comes to the right decision and Warner gets the call.

I thought the NFL was all about winning. If the QB that gives you the best chance to win is on the bench, how does that make the team better?
