Sakic plans press conference

Joe Sakic is scheduled to speak at a news conference Thursday before his charity golf tournament at Sanctuary in Sedalia, but there is no guarantee the Avalanche captain will announce whether he will play a 20th NHL season or retire. His Winnipeg-based agent, Don Baizley, on Monday said Sakic "still is trying to make up his mind." Baizley added: "The hang-up is whether Joe's up for the task. He sets the bar pretty high, and he needs to make sure he's up for the task." Sakic isn't under contract to the Avalanche, and as an unrestricted free agent, he technically can field offers from other teams. But it isn't expected that he would consider any options other than re-signing with Colorado or hanging up his skates.

Nobody and I mean nobody, had better draw any parallel to to the situation with Sundin here today. Joe is awesome!
Hopefully he will give us one more chance to see him finish his career with the Aves. If not, it won't be long before his number will be retired also.
Why is it, two of the classiest players to ever strap up the blades both wore number 19 and C's on their sweaters?
Joe will be in the Ave's front office at some future date. I'm sure of it.
Good TD there actually...Joe or Stevie Y...Hmmmm...that's a head scratcher...

There is no parallel between the two. I hope he comes back for at least another season. He's still too good to hang up the skates yet. I've always liked and respected Sakic. Joe is a true class act in a professional sports world where there are so few. I'm not talking about hockey alone but pro sports in general.

Awesome player.. hope he plays. He is an asset as a player and will hopefully be in the front office for years to come.

.... but there is no guarantee the Avalanche captain will announce whether he will play a 20th NHL season or retire.

So ..... what exactly would be the purpose of this press conference? Will he be talking about .... golf? Just curious!

August 26, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Actually, DCruiser, he will be talking about golf. He and his wife, Debbie, have hosted an event called "Bringing Hope To The Table" in Denver for many years now. Part of the event is a charity golf tournament.

One thing I think we can guarantee... He won't announce that he's retiring today. He may announce, though, that he's coming back, but I doubt that anything hockey-related will be announced.

Get ready guys heres a quote from TSN....Baizley also updated the status of his other prominent Avalanche free agent, Peter Forsberg.

"Peter would like to play if his foot problems are solved, and he's checking away at that." Baizley told the Post.

August 26, 2008  12:13 PM ET

WT, I think he'll also be talking about your 'do. Evidently everyone in Denver now wants one. I'm surprised T&R hasn't done a story on this.

I told them that I require $50,000 per appearance, whether in person or in a T&R thread. When you look this good, you can't come cheap.

Peter Goezinya

That's actually in this same article. Foppa is aiming to be ready to play around New Year's. We get updates on his status all the time from the Post and the Rocky Mountain News. As big of a Peter Forsberg fan as I am, it gets really annoying.

Not to P.O. baun-ded but why cant you assume the same issues are plaguing Sakic as Sundin? Sakic would be a great asset in anyones front office but Sundin would be the same. Is Sundin vilified because he is home in Sweden and not as accessible? I dont think we are assuming they are one in the same but has Joe been anymore transparent then Sundin? I would argue, he has not. Sakic is a marvel to watch, so is Sundin. Sakic has been in many ways the big shoulders for his teams, no doubt Sundin has carried the Leafs especially in the last few seasons. I think there is hostility toward Mats because he is 3900 miles away and can't provide sound bites or body language. Yes Im a Leafs apologist.

August 26, 2008  02:14 PM ET

Leafs apologist? I dont think we can be friends there solo-guy. LOL. Jk man.

Sakic is a true class act. He could come this season and get 90 points. I dont know if he likes his goalie situation though. Raycroft and Budaj? I'm surprised that Raycroft actually got a contract. He of the 2 wins in 19 games. No wonder Maurice got sh--it-canned.

Maurice: I think i'll put Raycroft in tonite.
****. coach: but he has the leagues worst save percentage.
Maurice: You cant give up on him like that
****. coach: you do realize that we're fighting for a play-off spot,right?
Maurice: exactly...Raycroft will carry us all the way to the promised land
****. coach: but we're 70 points out of a play-off spot right now coach
Maurice: It will be the gretaest come-back in NHL history.....
****. coach: but we're only 12 games into the season coach
Maurice: have you eaten a poutine today?
****. coach: but i'm allergic to gravy coach,i cant eat it
Maurice: We'll go out for dinner tonite and we'll order poutines
****. coach: i cant eat gravy,coach
Maurice: so what time shall i pick you up for dinner?
****. coach: er...ahh...i have an appoinment tonite coach, sorry,i cant go.
Maurice :an appointment? With who?
****. coach: Dr. Kevorkian coach.
Maurice: You mean Dr. Death?
****. coach: ahhh..no..its a different Dr.
Maurice: lets go have some poutine before you go to your appointment then
****. coach: whats the meaning of life, coach?
Maurice: hmmmm...i dont know man
****.caoch: did you just p--oop yourself coach?
Maurice: Actually no. I just didnt wipe my a-ss
****. coach: why not??!!
Maurice : i dont believe in toilet paper.
****. coach: I quit. I think i'll go into the Islanders organization. They have more hope there.
Maurice: after dinner,right?

That does it, I'm gettin' a fro. Wait, I have hardly any hair on the crown of my head. Can I borrow some of yours? I'll even take the clippings if they're discounted.

August 26, 2008  04:02 PM ET

Go to the hair salons there seabird. Pretend you're a maintenance worker and steal all the hair clippings and run away laughing hysterically.

August 26, 2008  04:12 PM ET

No, only WT's $50,000 strands will do. Show me the money!

August 26, 2008  04:12 PM ET

ouch. then LMAO!

August 26, 2008  04:22 PM ET

bgm, does SCTV still exist? If so, they should call for you. Hockey Corner you could call it - or The Poutine Express.

Post of the Day to you, sir.

August 26, 2008  04:42 PM ET

Yes,wt needs a hair cut in the worst way. Maybe we cant all booze together and when he passes out we'll cut all his hair off. We'll then stapple the hair on seabirds head. The seabird will walk around like nothings happened. LOL.

On another topic......i was partying and we were down to the last soldiers and my buddy just fell on the floor. He was sitting on the chair. He was wasted. Well anyways....my other buddy got up from his chair right away and put cheeze whiz on his eyes and his belly button and put crushed **** over his eyes. hhahahahah. We all crashed out after that. The next morning my buddy that fell down was laughing about it. Everybody had a good laugh that morning. Then i asked him if he checked his belly-button yet....he checked it and found cheese whiz and all laughed some more. hhahahhahaha. What good friends,eh? Hhahhahahaha. It was all in good fun. A good laugh was had that morning.
