Why Suns traded Strawberry

The Suns did not see D.J. Strawberry as a player who could mix his prowess to defend guards with an ability to run an offense. So they traded him for a rookie who they think can do both. The Suns dealt Strawberry to the Houston Rockets on Monday for rookie Sean Singletary in a move that adds another true point guard behind starter Steve Nash and incoming Slovenian point guard Goran Dragic. Monday's trade will save the Suns about $540,000, including projected luxury-tax savings. Strawberry was due to make $711,517 if he made the Suns' opening-night roster. Singletary will make the rookie minimum of $442,114. Singletary's deal is partially guaranteed but will be fully guaranteed if he is on the Suns' opening-night roster, which the team expects him to be.

Typical Suns move ... rid yourselves of anyone who even thinks of playing defense.

August 26, 2008  08:45 AM ET

this is cost cutting bullshi+ again

im sick and tired of this piss poor management

the suns just drafted a point guard to back nash up

D.J. Strawberry is gonna be a good player and was well liked so the suns better provide a better explanation than this load of dribble!

STUPID MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 26, 2008  08:50 AM ET

the only reason they got shaq and his massive contract was to make money not make the team better

dont forget before the matrix was traded the suns had the best record in the western conference

and dont even get me started on giving away 1st round draft picks with players who had 1 year left ( k.thomas that was b()llshi+)

luxury tax sucks but so does bombing out in the playoffs due to poor management

August 26, 2008  08:53 AM ET

strawberry is likely to be at best a journeyman back-up
I really don't think this trade is news worthy

August 26, 2008  09:03 AM ET

This is actually a bad move. Got to agree with winkstrap on this. Strawberry is a solid guard who actually plays defense. He would have been a valuable member of this team for Coach Porter.

Oh well, I hope the Rockets keep him on their roster.

August 26, 2008  09:03 AM ET

great move by the Rockets...thx to the retarded suns!

August 26, 2008  09:34 AM ET

I wonder if Porter had any say in this one? Seems boneheaded, obviously they're not playing for next year.

August 26, 2008  09:39 AM ET

But Mike was deeply criticized becasue he did not believe in DJ ...

Now neither the property believe in DJ skills...

Steve (Nash) are you listening ?

NY ! NY ! NY !

August 26, 2008  09:48 AM ET

he was a good guard who really didnt get to play much but i think he shouldnt go to the rockets just dont see a place for him other than a defensive presence

August 26, 2008  09:48 AM ET

wait do the suns even play defense anymore?

August 26, 2008  10:46 AM ET

at least he played defense..strawberry and raja bell give you some great flexibility in the backcourt..now you have a third ( less talented) steve nash...you see how well that works

August 26, 2008  11:38 AM ET

This current management and ownership group has simply destoryed this franchise. It's only a brief matter of time when we will supplant GS or LAC at the bottom of the Pacific division.

Jerry Colangelo, where are you?!?!?!?!?!

This move doesn't appear to make any sense at all. They Suns seem to be trying to build a team on the cheap. Then again, D.J. was the only player playing defense, so he obviously doesn't fit in.

Dj never had a solid chance to prove himself, i dont feel. But i cant help to laugh because i remember doing a throwdown a few months ago where a member of the nation said that DJ Strawberry was going to help lift the Suns to the Finals and I just had to laugh.

sorry for the double, stupid browser

I only became a Suns fan after they acquired Nash. I guess that makes me a bandwagoner. Is it too late to get off? I think the Suns management has been to the Pat Riley School of Implosion.

Jerry Colangelo, where are you???

August 26, 2008  12:17 PM ET

"I think the Suns management has been to the Pat Riley School of Implosion. "

It seems like there is a lot of bad management as of late....
Memphis, NY, Cleveland, etc.
- it seems almost inconceivable in this day & age

Hllywd: Nice to see I'm not the only one who misses ol' Jerry's guidance of the front office...
