LPGA demands players learn English

At a mandatory South Korean player meeting Aug. 20 at the Safeway Classic, the tour informed its largest international contingent that beginning in 2009, all players who have been on tour for two years must pass an oral evaluation of their English skills. Failure would result in a suspended membership. "Hopefully what we're talking about is something that will not happen," said Libba Galloway, the tour's deputy commissioner, of possible suspensions. "If it does, we wouldn't just say, 'Come back next year.' What we would do is work with them on where they fell short, provide them the resources they need, the tutoring . . . and when we feel like they need to be evaluated again, we would evaluate."

HELLOOOOOOO!!! USA Government PLEEEEAASSSEEEE take note. PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LIVE HERE SHOULD HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH.

August 26, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Can they legally enforce this, I know they are a private organization but really. If you are trying to promote your tour as a world tour then this isnt helping.

August 26, 2008  11:39 AM ET

why can't more sports, any other kind of companies, any other place that have people working for them in any job do this. i am so tired of going to an ATM and being asked if i would like english or 20 other language's...

August 26, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Yes they can enforce this! Just as they enforce no men allowed on there tour. People don't have to play on the tour so its there choice if they want to play and adhere to the policies.

August 26, 2008  11:44 AM ET

Beast hit the nail on the head.

My forefathers didn't kick British arse, German Arse, Korean Arse, and Vietnamese arse so that I had to press 1 for English.

August 26, 2008  12:14 PM ET

What a load of regressive, discriminatory garbage. They could have set up initiatives to get members to learn english without resorting to threats of suspension. Golf is a worldwide game, and their players are from every corner of the globe. That fact should be celebrated rather than swept under the carpet. Fortunately, no one will care because a) it's the LPGA and b) clowns like the posters above me think that the Universe revolves around the USA.

August 26, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Lets put it this way Badger6 if it wasnt for the good ole USA your butt would be goose stepping and speaking German or possibly dead in a camp Im sure we all wouldnt want that. So yes it does revolve around the worlds police. Because we are the only country with the balls to stand up. LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!! Oh and by the way thank a soldier for both of our rights to be able to have opinions and express them without fear of repercussion!!

August 26, 2008  12:32 PM ET

If you're a top athlete, I thought you wanted to compete against the best? Not against the best who have to pass an English test. The LPGA "leadership" is a joke. Should we make English proficiency mandatory for US CITIZENS? Hell, yeah! Last time I checked, the LPGA was an international league.

August 26, 2008  12:44 PM ET

Btw, how are they going to administer this test? If you look foreign, you're going to have take it? If you're an Asian from New Zealand, will you have to take it? What about Annika Sorenstam? English isn't her native language. Seems like they're going to have to have everybody take it, or their will be a lot of problems.

scottc1010 should learn English before posting a comment. There is different from their. They're also mean something different by the way.

August 26, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Sorry for the typo - I meant "means."

Now, do you think scottc1010's error was a typo or ignorance?

August 26, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Hey Skippy, it's easy. Have everyone test before they get their tour card and yes, test everyone. Besides, how long do you think it takes before you figure out someone can't understand or speak english? Ten, fifteen seconds maybe?

August 26, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Unbelievable - skippy doesn't know the difference either. There and their are not the same word.

August 26, 2008  01:34 PM ET

NYY25to13, I love the Yankees too, but if the MLB imposed the same testing, we'd be out of a bunch of top-notch players.

Let's call this what it is, there's too much heat coming from one area of the field, so they're going after that group. It's the most defensible way to go after a race group. Obviously, skin color would be way too controversial, but that's basically what they're doing - singling out an ethnic group that is taking too much of the winnings.

August 26, 2008  01:36 PM ET

diesel if thats the best comeback you can come up with I guess I am in real trouble!!!!! Sorry but whats the percentage of these international tournaments held outside of the U.S??? The ladies don't have to join the LPGA and learn english, thats their choice. They aren't forcing them to join.

August 26, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Sorry but I have been to other countries where they look at you and call you a stupid american because you can't speak their language... Why shouldn't the U.S. be the same way? I know when I am stationed in another country or even deployed there I try to learn their language because I don't expect them to learn english. Just as when they are here visiting or even worse living I expect them to try to learn some english and not expect me to speak their language.

August 26, 2008  01:40 PM ET

Wow, scottc1010, I'm not trying to give you a "comeback." I guess you're a little bit sensitive... I'm simply pointing out an error you made in English. I pointed it out on another guy's comment too - so don't feel singled out.

It's just hilarious that people who get all fired up about the English language have such poor mastery of it.

August 26, 2008  01:45 PM ET

not all fired up, just debating no biggie.

August 26, 2008  02:14 PM ET

scott, i was the same way when stationed oversea's. I always tried to pick up at least the basics. And they appreciated it, just like we would if we saw the effort.
