NFL wants Rooney to control Steelers

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke loud and clear yesterday to those Rooney brothers who might want to sell the Steelers to outside interests: The league and its owners will do everything in their power to keep Dan Rooney and his son in control of the franchise. "There's great respect for the Rooney family in the National Football League,'' Goodell said after a 21/2 --hour meeting with the five Rooney brothers, "and we want to do everything we can to ensure that the Steelers continue to be operated by the Rooneys and the way they've been operated." Four brothers have two offers to sell their combined 64 percent interest in the Steelers -- one from New York billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller and one from their brother, team chairman Dan Rooney and his son Art Rooney II, who is president of the club and also attended yesterday's meeting. Although no details of the offers have surfaced, it has been assumed that Druckenmiller's offer is higher or else the brothers would have accepted Dan Rooney's bid already. What they should not assume, Goodell intimated yesterday, is that if they accept a higher offer than Dan Rooney's that the NFL owners will approve it.

Nothing lasts forever. Just ask Al Davis! Mr. Rooney has to be replaced sometime. I think the NFL needs another Dan Snyder, Bob Kraft or that quiet moralist in Dallas running a team.

I like the idea of the NFL backing the Rooneys. Thay have truly been one of the classiest ownerships in the history of sports.

i am a Cowboys fan however, i think the Roonys are good for the NFL. and Dan has done a good job keeping the team competive. the NFL should back the Roonys and not let them sale out to the highest bidder.

That's stupid. Why should the Rooneys lose control of their team? The NFL needs to provide funds to the Rooneys if needed to buy these greedy brothers' shares.

Dan is THE MAN!

Thank you my friend.

In an era of owners in sports like Dan Snyder and the Nuttings (Pirates), why would anyone want to lose class owners such as the Rooneys? Dan's brothers need to get off the pot and square the deal with Dan away!

Regardless of what NFL team you like, It makes no sense for anyone to want a change in ownership of the Steelers. They are one of the last "pure" teams in the NFL. Just read the book Steagles and you will have a new found faith in them. Besides, dont the brothers want to sell their piece of the pie so they can make more horse racing events. Whatever, football or horse racing, C'Mon, the NFL should kick those two A** Clowns out of the league.

LetsGoPens.....Dan is The Man and so was his dad. Too bad the brothers don't take heed........

Letting the team go to anyone other than the Rooney family (Dan and Art) is like watering down drinks at a bar, you make more money but lose all the respect of your guests....The NFL needs to keep tradition alive and strong.
