Hokies may redshirt QB Taylor

Senior Sean Glennon will be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback this season, Coach Frank Beamer announced yesterday, creating the possibility that sophomore Tyrod Taylor will redshirt this season. Beamer allowed the quarterbacks to compete during preseason training camp before making the decision over the weekend. Throughout Beamer's news conference, he continued to refer to the "long term," a clear indication of his interest in allowing Taylor to develop along with a talented group of freshmen that Beamer has raved about. The duo split quarterback duties last season, but Beamer hoped to identify a firm starter for the season.

If he's got promise for the future, there's no reason to waste him on this season. I seem to stand alone, but I think Virginia Tech is in for a long disappointing season.

It's a future move but it's a risky one. Sean Glennon doesn't exactly set the world on fire back there.

Sean Glennon is to Quarterbacks what Mike Gottfried is to announcing.

I believe that the redshirt can come off at any point. Last year it came off in the first game vs. LSU. Beamer plans on dressing and traveling Tyrod, thus providing Insurance. Sean is demonstrating that he can step up and even has NFL potential. He also has an improved offensive line. The question marks surround how quickly his receivers come up to speed, can the Hokies provide a running game and most important Tyrods level of maturity regarding this situation and the team overall.

I think this is a good move for Va Tech. Sean Glennon has senior leadership and has proven he can win games. He has made a couple watch lists and experts have this team doing well. Saving Tyrod with a redshirt will help him learn the system and also adjust to much quicker and better disguised defenses in college. I view it as similar to an NFL team not throwing a draft pick into the hot seat. Tyrod also is not a proven star; just a possible star; so I feel Va Tech shouldn't lose their last season with Glennon

Glennon lost respect in Blacksburg (I used to live there) when he thought about going pro after last season. I mean, 12 TD's, 5 INT's, and 31 sacks.
