Kidd gives gold medal to casino

Don't worry. This isn't a case of Jason Kidd paying off a Charles Barkley-sized gambling debt. He's just fulfilling a promise to Elaine Wynn of Wynn Casino fame. "Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks," Kidd told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game. I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do."

What? I thought those GOLD MEDALS meant everything to these athletes.

Guess I'm wrong. Hey Kidd, next time out, gimme one will ya? I got some debt I need to pay off. At least your gold will go to real good use.

I understand the game, too. Brother, you got MAAAAAADDDDD skillz! C'mon, gimme one of them bling-blings.. I'll even vote for you in the NBA all star ballot.

Slick of Kidd to do........In this day of DABron types. Its a nice change of pace to see this type of kindness.

"But I told her I had one already."

Already having one doesn't justify giving one away. Michael Phelps already has 14 golds; that doesn't mean he'll give one away just because someone treated him nice.

How about giving it to Coach K?

August 27, 2008  07:29 AM ET

How about lettin this man do whatever he wants with his property...

August 27, 2008  07:32 AM ET

I think some people, most people are taking this the wrong way. He's got a gold, he had the experience, he made a promise to this woman that if they won gold she would get his medal. I see no problem with him giving his medal away to a woman who held these athletes in her hotel for almost a month and treated them like kings... I don't see the big deal

August 27, 2008  08:21 AM ET

It's his property, but I thought those things were cherished, not to be used as a Tip.
Carl Lewis put one of his in his fathers coffin, as a parting gesture. Maybe Kidd was REALLY excited about the room service!

August 27, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Note to self:

Next time I'm in Vegas, stay at the Wynn. Elaine gives really good "room service".

August 27, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Sweet gesture by Kidd. His explanation is straight to the point and something that a rich athlete should be commended on. And this is not his first gold. Unlike the others in the team that was their first gold and they were trying for 4 years.

This is not the time to attack JKidd. Lets give him his dues.

August 27, 2008  08:35 AM ET

lol....yeah, the gold medal sure means alot to him
I mena it's one thing to give it to yor mom.....but to give it as a 'thank you for letting me stay and gamble - ?

August 27, 2008  08:39 AM ET

I don't have an Olympic gold medal to pass over to them, but if the Wynn will comp me for a weekend and toss in a h00ker I will glady give them the bowling trophy I earned via blood, sweat and tears back in '67......

@ Locnar-
Did you listen at all to the interviews with these guys? To a man, representing their COUNTRY is what meant everything to them. The gold medal is a material symbol of that. I give props to Kidd for following through on a promise. You might want to engage your brain before you flap your gums.

He can wipe his @-$-$ with it if he wants to. It is his medal. If no one can tell you what to do with your property, stop trying to tell him what to do with his.

August 27, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Its his property period!!! If he wanted to give it to a homeless person who are we to question it??? Who cares what he did with it... I am glad he lived up to his word and actually fulfilled his promise to a person... I guess we all know now that Jkidd can be trusted when he gives you his word about something.

she must have provided him with good "serivice"

August 27, 2008  09:22 AM ET

sounds like kidd has a new sugar momma

August 27, 2008  09:28 AM ET

BESIDES, THE "GOLD MEDAL" IS NOT EVEN PURE GOLD. I THINK IT IS 10-14KT GOLD PLATED THAT WILL NOT FADE.

AS SOME HAVE ELOQUENTLY SAID HERE, IT'S ABOUT REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY AND THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE OF COMPETING AND WINNING THAT COUNTS. I BELIEVE MS. WYNN WILL CHERISH THIS MEDAL FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE...

PROPS TO KIDD!!

even if not a 'gambling' thing, this 'gift' is certainly symbolic of major league sports today and its devotion to 'big money' rather than true sporting competition and everyday fans -- salaries, revenues, prices are skyhigh, while the game has become 'show time' and predictable.

Elaine Wynn does alot of charity work, I'm sure she will use the medal for that and not keep it in a cabinet in Kidd's trophey room collecting dust
