Why Culpepper, Alexander are jobless
There was an item about Daunte Culpepper today on profootballtalk.com that mirrors the Shaun Alexander situation. It's amazing Culpepper doesn't have a job in the NFL when there's such a dearth of good backup quarterbacks. Why he's not in New Orleans, Atlanta, Carolina, Chicago, Detroit or Kansas City (or a few other places) is interesting to me. PFT wonders whether Culpepper is being blackballed; I don't think it's that, but rather a situation where some teams are afraid of him coming in and wanting so badly to be a starter that he wouldn't accept role behind a player ( Brodie Croyle, Kyle Orton) he'd consider clearly inferior. Re: Alexander, I wonder the same thing, except for this: He's not a good blocker, receiver or special-teams player. So unless you bring him in as a starting back, what exactly is he? For instance, you might look at the Giants and say he'd be a good fit behind Brandon Jacobs, or even as a co-starter with Jacobs. But then you see the versatility of Derrick Ward, and you see the lightning-quickness and return ability of Ahmad Bradshaw, and you say: What exactly would Alexander do here.

makes no sense that Culpepper can't find work in the nfl. alexander having a hard time finding work, could be attributed to not accepting a league min contract.

Alexander never really impressed me and as the article says he can't block and isn't very versatile. Culpepper would be a good fit for some of the teams listed above. The Chiefs could use him but if (or when) Croyle starts to flounder they would have to put Culpepper in because of his experience.

Culpeper is broken and good RBs are a dime a dozen....some teams have as many as 3 quality backs for a combined pay less than Alexander would demand for himself....

Culpepper should accept a backup role and wait for one of these frail, sissy QBs to get hurt..

Vinny Testeverde will have a job before Dante Culpepper. I'm not joking.
If Cincinnati took Chris Henry back, then Alexander will find a home, you watch. He'd have a team now if he wasn't in love with himself.

Culpepper needs to swallow his pride and back-up somewhere. If he has any shot to play again and be successful he needs to learn a system and play within it. His days of playmaking with his legs are done. Athletes fully bounce back from a torn ligament in the 2nd year. It will be nearly 3 with Culpepper. His was catastrophic, tearing 3 in the same knee; we'll never see that same player again.
Alexander never got the pay-off. His contract was structured where the real money kicked in year 3 (this season). But I'm not crying for anyone making more than the league minimum. Hope he was smart about his dough (and his Chunky Soup money).
