Do Mets want Yankees' Pavano?

Could "The Idle" be moving? Carl "American Idle" Pavano is scheduled to start tomorrow night against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium - unless another team wants him. The Post has learned Pavano was put on waivers within the last 24 hours and available to be claimed and then traded if the Yankees find a match. The Yankees are dead in the AL East race - they are 10 ?? games back of the Rays - and are seven lengths behind the Red Sox in the wild-card chase with 30 games to go. They would be wise to see what they could get for Pavano before he leaves via free agency when the Yankees don't pick up a $13 million option. With John Maine a strong possibility to be done for the season because of a shoulder problem, the Mets might be interested in Pavano if the Yankees agree to pick up some of the $3.78 million left on the contract. There is approximately $1.83 million remaining this year and a $1.95 million buyout on his contract.

I'd take him for a very low salary with a ton of insentives. The only success he's had (and it was very small) came in the NL East.......

August 28, 2008  08:37 AM ET

Who would give anything for him of value?

Better to take the draft picks.....

theres NO WAY the Mets would sign him. Not after the Castillo, Alou and Pedro problems. No chance this is happening.

Yea but she's got more miles on her than a 1970's Datsun. Still looks tasty though.

ghost, I am not completely sure, but unless the yankees make a contract offer or offer arbitration to Pavano, I don't think they are elegible to recieve a draft pick.

For the love of God if the Mets offer 2 beers and a pretzel for Pavano Hank should take the offer. They'd be of more use than that bum has been the last 4 years. Only in baseball can a guy sign on to work for 4 years and only work for 2/3 of a year and yet still get paid the full amount. This is why baseball contracts should contain a clause that mandates a certain percentage of playing time to earn the full contract amount.

August 28, 2008  09:40 AM ET

well said , bcolt....guaranteed contracts in professional sports are akin to a socialist device...you get paid no matter what..ridiculous...

August 28, 2008  09:45 AM ET

I can only pray that we do not sign Pavano...Although Pedro is a Hall of Famer, he has not done much for the Mets either...He has spent way too much time on the DL since signing with us. Basically, I am supporting bcolt's thoughts...

August 28, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Pavano is the poster child for bad contracts although Mike Hampton comes in pretty close. Those guys both spent more time on the DL than they did on the mound for the teams that signed them. Even if Pavano makes 5 more starts this year that would leave him with 25 starts in 4 years for the Yanks. You figure 32 or so would count as a full year so 32x4= 128. So Pavano basically only earned (if you can call it that with a 6-6 record and a 4.5 era) 15.62% of his contract and even if he makes it to 25 starts that is only 19.53%. That is pathetic. If I showed up for work only 20% of the time they would fire my arse. I always thought baseball was America's game but apparently they support Communism so how can that be?

What, the Mets need to acquire someone to fill out their 60-day DL next year?
