Penn State backup won't transfer

The seconds ticked off. One, two, three . . . eight seconds elapsed before Pat Devlin finally answered the money question. Would you consider transferring? Two days after being told he wasn't the starting quarterback for Penn State's opener Saturday, Devlin was openly disappointed, yet candid, in a conference call yesterday. When he was asked if he would entertain the idea of leaving State College - since starter Daryll Clark will also be eligible in 2009 - the redshirt sophomore gave a measured response. "I don't think so," Devlin said carefully. "Right now, I've been consumed with this, fighting for the job. As of now, I'm just going to work hard and do my thing." It's important to note that Clark has not been guaranteed the starting job past Week 1. However, coach Joe Paterno said Tuesday that he doesn't want the senior "looking over his shoulder" and has emphasized his desire to stick with a one-quarterback system.

He should transfer. Paterno is a really old man and the school should get him out of there before someone is hurt, based on all of the mess that goes on unders Paterno's reign. You see these reports on the news of school kids getting attacked. Would not happen to me. Revenge is good and the kid should transfer and get out of such a sad situation.

This is the same line of thinking that kept Morelli in the starting lineup as long as he was.

Transfer? How about winning the job there Patty?

August 28, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Paterno's age has nothing to do with picking a QB. I would understand if he wanted to transfer though, since he could be sitting for 2 more years. I hope he doesn't. He may still make it in.

If he transfers he would be better of going the 1-AA route so he doesn't lose a year of eligibility sitting on the bench.

Anyway, I think he stays and gets on the field.

Can PSU please pull it together? I would love for them to be a power again. Maybe a couple seasons to develop might be good for the kid. or he could go bust his a ss and earn the job, there's novel idea, huh?

Nothing against Darryl. Pat, you have worked so hard to accomplish a lot both academically and in football. Don???t give up on your dream to play Pro ball, YOU know you have the capability and drive to do so. Mr. Devlin, sometimes one has to quit in order to eventually achieve a dream, a dream that will not be realized at PSU. Pat, don???t play on Saturday??? transfer to another Division 1 team, play 3 years. It is in your capable hands. Best of luck???

Devlin is the real deal and deserves to be in there. I see a lot of Joe Falco here and I think Pat could lead the Blue Hens to several championships.

1,2,3,8 ??? No wonder he's not the starter, he can't count.

This is why PSU has trouble getting blue chip QB recruits, JoePa favors seniority.

In other news, Walmarts in Michigan are selling out of ammo. Local residents say "Russia might invade Georgia but Michigan won't be next!"

Somebody already mentioned this, and they're right: he transfers, he sits. He's better off staying and playing for PSU than hopefully starting somewhere else.

August 28, 2008  04:23 PM ET

True, but he may not receive meaningful playing time for 2 more years if Darryl stays for two years. Hard to assess ability based upon his final year of eligibility at PSU. Sits out a year, has 3 years of eligibility and can demonstrate his talents.

Transferring would be stupid!! EVERY college football team needs a solid 1,2 punch...and [god forbid] what happens if Clark gets hurt?? or plays like hammered goat s**t? anything can happen and it usually does. Devlin "deserves shot"... well, he got one and Clark beat him out. The kid should stay put and keep plugging.

He should transfer to a school like Pitt that will develop his talent and not waste it like every other QB to wear the Blue & White.

August 28, 2008  09:56 PM ET

Kerry Collins wasted his talent? He could have won the Heisman...

Oh yeah, and I followed Tyler Palko throughout his high school career at West Alleghany. Number three QB in his recruiting class. What happened there? Oh yeah, he was barely in the top half of quarterbacks in the Big East by the time he graduated.

He should transfer. There's no glory in riding the PSU bench waiting for an injury to the starter, so you get your shot.
Tell him how state lost Jim Kelly and Jeff Hostetler.
