Gordon may compromise Bulls deal

If Ben Gordon signs the one-year qualifying offer (for $6.4 million), the Bulls would not be able to trade him without his permission. And if he were to agree, he would forfeit his "Bird" rights. No way Gordon would do that. The only way for the Bulls to deal him would be through a sign-and-trade, in which they ink him to a longer contract and then make a move. But then Gordon becomes a base-year compensation player, which leads to other complications. Ultimately, I think Gordon will "compromise" and sign a four- or five-year deal with the Bulls for around $8 million per season. It might not be what he wanted (or rejected?) a year ago, but it will be enough to give him security.

if he comes back to the bulls i hope he doesnt bring a negative attitude with him

Both sides are in a rock and a hard place. Gordon does not have that much choices. Deng got most of the salary.

Will the Bulls actually offer him any of these deals at this point?
If so, it's good to hear that Gordon will sign something, even if it's just to fulfill a sign-and-trade deal.
Looks as if the attitudes of both the Bulls and Gordon are improving.

8 mil per for 4-5 years is a DAMN FINE contract for gordon
if they had to go up a little - ok-

But a stupid business decision on his part last year is his fault......

August 28, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Who exactly does Ben think he is skills wise...DWADE? his line every nite is 18pts, 1 ast, 3 TO, 1 reb on 20 shots and 28-30 minutes...Take the 8 mill and laugh all the way to the bank.

August 28, 2008  09:16 AM ET

$8 mil a year is about right for him. He should just sign and get back to basketball. If he's worried he'll fall behind market value then he should take a 3-4 year deal so that he can renogotiate sooner.

Honestly, I hope Gordon goes to Europe and the Bulls move on. Free up cap room to sign a FA next year. Don't get tied down to his one-dimensional game.

August 28, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I said, about 1 year ago this would happen. Ben Gordon is talented, but not talented enough to try and call shots. I knew eventually he would have to settle for less, or the same offer he was originally given.

August 28, 2008  11:04 AM ET

He needs to take that one year deal, improve his game and take a shot at a long term deal next year.

Like I said in my blog a few weeks ago, this guy needs to stop thinking like he's Dwayne Wade or Allen Iverson. He isn't that good.

August 28, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Oh go to the Euro League your easily replaced !!!

August 28, 2008  11:21 AM ET

I agree with HOVA. Gordon is a one dimensional threat. He brings nothing but a jumpshot to the game. The Bulls have made a lot of mistakes lately, but this isn't one of them.

August 28, 2008  11:34 AM ET

Gordon needs to be happy with what he is offered and take it.

Either take it or be prepared to take his British passport and sign with some European team. He wouldn't count as an American on the roster so he might be more lucrative over there.

To clarify: Ben was born in London, England. He came to the States as a kid (I think he was around 7 when his family moved to Mount Vernon, NY). Anyway, being born in England makes him a citizen of Great Britain, meaning he gets around the rule that some leagues have about the number of Americans on a roster.

Good point but I think, given everything going on with the Euro leagues this year, if he had a better offer from Europe he would have already taken it. Earlier in the summer, he threatened to play in Europe next year "if he got the right offer". It obviously didn't materialize.

I think he's stuck. Take the Bull's offer and lace 'em up.

August 28, 2008  01:06 PM ET

J Hova: Doesn't that depend on how the leagues wrote the rules defining an American player, and not on Great Brittan's definition of who qualifies as a citizen?

Gordon messed up on this one. He had a chance to prove himself and prove everybody that he was worth more then the offer they made last year. His only choice now is to take the 1 year offer and prove everybody wrong this time. If he does not prove anybody wrong within one year then he is truly screwed.
