Dodgers eye Rockies closer

A National League source confirmed Willy Taveras and closer Brian Fuentes were placed on waivers to inspect their trade value. Fuentes went on Monday and would clear today, though it's almost certain he will be claimed. Taveras is eligible to clear Thursday and might since Boston is heading in another direction for an outfielder and Washington, which likes Taveras, will not add payroll. The Dodgers are likely to claim Fuentes, along with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays, the two teams that pushed hardest to acquire him last month. If Fuentes is claimed, the Rockies can work out a trade or pull him back. They have made it known they want a premium young starting pitcher.

Noooo Rockies!!! Get him back. The Dodgers are sinking. The D-Backs were just swept by the Padres. And you're only six games out in the worst and most unpredictable division in baseball! This division is your's for the taking!

I hope the Cardinals claim him.....I'd probably surrender Mitchell Boggs to get him if we thought we could re-sign him.

The Dodgers should be looking for a clutch hitter to help out Manny. They outhit the Phillies 13-10 and get shutout 5-0. They left 27 runners on base in that game which equates to leaving the bases loaded in every inning. The young Dodgers like Ethier, Kemp, Loney and Martin are very good, but, they don't come through when the game is on the line. What good is a closer if you never have the lead in the 9th inning?

Give it up LA you are more burnt than my toast !!!

This is moot. The Rockies have placed Fuentes on the bereavement list, effectively canceling his initial waiver placement.

Gets By Buckner 86

He's eligible to come off of the bereavement list today or tomorrow, so the waiver process can be completed by Sunday. That leaves only what remains of Sunday for a contender to make a trade.

I doubt that he will get traded, and he certainly won't be traded to the Dodgers. Why would the Rox trade him now, when they are only 6 out of the division lead and 3 behind the Dodgers? Why not just trade Matt Holliday to Arizona this weekend while you're at it? This ain't happening.

August 28, 2008  01:21 PM ET

I agree with you wt......but why place him on waivers at all then? just to see if anyone would grossly overpay to get him?

August 28, 2008  01:26 PM ET

Yeah, basically. Plus, they were 8 or 9 games out at the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get moved. Manny Corpas has been lights-out since the All-Star Break. He just won't be traded to the Dodgers. That would be dumber than the Packers trading Favre to the Vikings.

Actually, he's not eligible to come off the bereavement list until tomorrow, so, if the Rockies place him on waivers again, he won't clear until after the Sunday deadline, making any trade possibility vanish.

I agree, though, that even the idea of trading him doesn't make sense. The Rockies still have a chance in the NL west. They're probably better off having placed him on the bereavement list after all.

I'd love to see this guy in a Cardinal uniform.....Fuentes, that is

August 28, 2008  02:28 PM ET

The Dodgers only have one premium young pitcher and that's Billingsley. The Dodgers won't trade him.

If the Dodgers current plays live up to their "potential" they would be in first and wouldn't need to trade anyone.

August 28, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Dodgers need another big hitter also but getting a solid closer is needed.. however they need consistent starters also.

August 28, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Isn't this about the time the Rox turned the afterburners on last year and won like 22 out of 27? I guess they realize now that even IF they can do it again, they can't seal the deal.

Big Blue and the Drop 'Backs should wake up and smell the same roses: with three solid teams virtually a lock for the post-season (LAA, TB and ChiCubs) and several others fundamentally more sound (and riding some legitimate momentum), it doesn't matter who wins the NL West at this point. No one has goods to get anything significant done.

I'm a rabid Dodger fan, but I'm getting mighty tired of the "P"(otential) word...

August 28, 2008  03:14 PM ET

The Dodgers are STINKING right about now. Smell 'em???

August 28, 2008  03:43 PM ET

Nam Vet and drj are right. I love the Dodgers, but they need some bats. I'm getting tired of seeing 2-1, 3-2 losses.

August 28, 2008  04:36 PM ET

o, thats really gonna help them win
they cant even get it to save situations
