Barcelona has opened negotiations with Xavi Hernandez to keep him at the club for the rest of his career and are hopeful of concluding a deal this week. Xavi and his agent, Ivan Corretja, met with the Catalan club's sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, and football director, Raul Sanllehi, on Wednesday for a briefing.

I think "lifetime deal" may be a bit misleading. If Barca is still paying him 100k a week when he's in his 60s then they may have screwed up.

Good move on Barca's part to keep him around for as long as they can.

He's a foundational player, both on and off the pitch.

Home-grown talent, leadership ability, and amazing skill in one player; hell yes they are signing him to a long-term deal. I don't heap a lot of praise on blaugrana types but this guy, right now, is pound for pound one of the top ten players in the world, easily.

If he can maintain his level of play this season, Barcelona is going to be a force to be reckoned with in any game they play.

Agree with all, he was a huge key to Spain winning the Euro and is having an incredible year, it also doesn't hurt that he is Catalan. But good for Xavi, he definitely deserves it.

Don't think I could add anymore to what's already been said. Puyol and Xavi ARE Barcelona football! And hopefully with Xavi's future secure (not that it ever was in doubt) and with Pep's plans of playing higher up in the pitch I fully expect Xavi to continue riding the wave of his Euro performance right into La Liga and Champions League play. Refreshing to see loyalty shown by both parties involved.

Since my lack of sleep this week and a boring day at work is making me delusional, I'll say that if I were a gay man, I would say that Xavi is a part-time lover and a full-time friend.

Xavi is a beast and the best CM in the WORLD at present. I can't wait until he starts scoring the magnificent goals that he can score but didn't under Rijkaard's system due to being further away from the opponents' box.

I laughed when I read the title of this snippet. However, I did not read the rest.

He deserves it. He is true class both on and off the field ....

But ... will he take it? I hope so! With all the cash being thrown around these days one never knows for sure ... even after they sign on the dotted line!

The most underrated player on this Barca squad. If he were to be an international player (Brazilian, Argentinan, Somewhere in Africa) he would be considered one of the best of the world. I believe he's one of the best and does not get recognized enough like a Messi, A Gerrard, a Riquelme. No he's not a one man wrecking crew, but he plays his position, and does it extremely well. Give the man what he deserves!
