Why NFL really wants longer season

Sentiment among NFL leaders to reduce the preseason to two or three games per team and lengthen the regular season to 17 or 18 games, up from the current 16, is growing, and it seems generally accepted that such an adjustment likely will be made within the next few years. And while they regret having their product diminished by injuries to players in games that don't count in the regular season standings, the real impetus for Roger Goodell and the owners to act on the issue is economic. More regular season games would mean more revenue in television rights fees, which are worth about $3.7 billion per season in the current deals with NBC, Fox, CBS, ESPN and DirecTV.

Speaking or records being broken Jerry Rice rescord should still stand. He did what moss did in 5 less games.

August 28, 2008  06:49 AM ET

wo that wasnt me who typed that. Speaking of records Jerry Rice should still have his. It took Moss 5 more games to accomplish the same thing

where is spell check when you need it

August 28, 2008  06:55 AM ET

longer season means more player earning pay checks as injuries will increase. these guys need time to rest their bodies. Guess all Czar Roger cares about is the money.

I agree with Grossed out. That photo of Godell needs to go. The guy clearly just farted and he's worried the people in the front row of the news conference might catch a whiff.

The NFL is not broke so DON'T fix it! I like the preseason. It gives me a chance to see the rookies and backup players in detail. Alot of those guys are future starters.

August 28, 2008  07:10 AM ET

It's about time. More meaningful games is such a better option that these pathetic pre-season squabbles. Showing them on TV is almost laughable. I can't understand how someone can spend full ticket fare for a pre-season game; especially if it's the first or fourth game. You get less starters, watered down offensives; but I guess the long layoff is worth the price.

I don't think 1 extra game will cause too much change in the standard routine of things, but by having 2 extra games may cause teams to re-think they way they use their starters and backups. Backups would be more important and have a higher value in the NFL player market. Could be good thing for 2nd teir players.

The obvious for the fan is all upside, You get more real football with less pre-season.

Sums it up

August 28, 2008  07:25 AM ET

While I'm in favor of decreasing the preseason, I'm not sure how I feel about lengthening the regular season. Increased revenue as well as increased injuries would be the result, as bodies will tire towards the end of the season while pockets get fatter!

August 28, 2008  07:35 AM ET

More games mean a raise for the players. you kow as soon as they change it everyone is going to say i Play 2 more games but we all know they get over paid anyhow

August 28, 2008  07:40 AM ET

I don't think he farted, not relieving, I think he was receiving! LOL
