Sakic's coming back to Avs

After three months of pondering and procrastinating about whether to continue his NHL career or retire, Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic finally had an answer late Tuesday afternoon for his agent, Don Baizley. The hockey player, 39, told Baizley that he had decided to play again and that it was time to cut a deal with Colorado general manager Francois Giguere. By Wednesday morning, Baizley and Colorado had agreed on a one-year, $6-million contract, and the Avalanche made the announcement in the afternoon. From his Winnipeg, Manitoba, office Wednesday, Baizley said that although Sakic was an unrestricted free agent, signing with another team never was a possibility. As Sakic delayed making his decision in the wake of the Avalanche's second-round playoff elimination against Detroit on May 1, rumors began to circulate that he also would consider leaving Colorado. Baizley previously had been reluctant to comment on them because even acknowledging them would add fuel, but he was more adamant after the fact.

He's one of the top NHL leaders of all-time. If he wanted a spot on Team Canada for the 2010 Olympics, I'd give it to him. I don't care that he'll be 57 by then, it would still inspire the hell out of the other guys on the team.

This is big news?? He would have been better off retiring. His team was humiliated by the Wings last playoffs and the team hasn't gotten any better. Sakic and Sundin should just go away.

Great guy, great player, great leader and nothing but class.

August 28, 2008  07:20 AM ET

Great day for Hockey. This is a leader, a role model in the true sense of the word.

August 28, 2008  07:26 AM ET

Glad to see he came back for another season. He's still got what it takes to play at that level. Good luck next season Joe.

Who cares. What we really need is some Matt sundin Threads.

August 28, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Outstanding. What about Sundin. Isnt he supposed to decide Wheaties or Grape nuts this weekend?

HAHAHAHA....LOL...ROFLMAO.....clueless

August 28, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Clueless? I think not Tribe13. A hockey player is only as good as his surrounding cast and obviously he doesn't have any.

August 28, 2008  11:15 AM ET

I mean dont get me wrong, he is still a big player, and very much respected, but the league is only getting younger and he's obviously getting older. Look at Yzerman, Hull etc. Still great players, but it was time to go, the game is getting to fast for them. He just wont be "effective" with "today's" game.

August 28, 2008  11:43 AM ET

BIOHAZARD- Yeah the league is getting younger, your right! however, he is still above average, adn can put more points on the board than most and i mean 75-80 percent of the NHLERS right now! Sakic is still, adn will still be a dominating force this year adn next if he decides to play!

Remember the only reason why he was entertaining the idea of retirement! not cause he wasnt physically able, he just wanted to make sure his heart was in it 100%!

THIS IS WHAT WE NEEDED! 2001 coming back all over again!

LETS GO BOYS!!!!!

August 28, 2008  11:58 AM ET

I agree with Biohazard except the part where he implied Sakic is like Sundin and needs to go away. I say congrats to Joe and I hope he has an extremely successful year. I also hope the Avs dont make the playoffs :P

Nice.
My wife will be happy, too. She saw that pic and said "whoooooo's that"!!!
I couldn't convince her it was me from my slightly younger days but it will make it easier for me to watch hockey this year all the same.

Thanks for giving us at least one more, Joe!

This is no longer news. I wrote about this yesterday.

August 28, 2008  04:34 PM ET

Best news of the week.
Good point Yoda, I'd want hime on nay team even if he was 57. Look for him to end up in the Avs organization when it all coems down.

Happy to hear that! I didn't think Sakic would let this deteriorate into a Sundin or Forsberb saga! He has too much class to let that happen!
