GM slump makes NASCAR nervous

As NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series arrives for the Pepsi 500 on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, the sluggish economy already is making it tough for the series, race teams and tracks to attract all the corporate sponsors to help pay their bills. GM is reeling from huge financial losses and the giant automaker plans to slash annual spending by $10 billion. Its support of NASCAR and other auto racing is not exempt from possible cuts. While GM evaluates what to cut, some in NASCAR are growing more anxious. "It concerns me," said Elliott Sadler, who drives the No. 19 Dodge for Gillett Evernham. "Everybody's scared because they don't know where it's going." While GM won't divulge what it spends on NASCAR annually, some within the NASCAR community put the figure at $120 million to $140 million.

You think Hass actually gave Tony Stewart half his team away for free?
He didn't become a billionaire doing that.
GM said it would make Tony coming back to Chevy it's number one priority and they did. Who knows how much cash they gave Hass.
The luckiest man in the 2008 USA economic recession has to be Tony Stewart.
He got his before GM makes their cuts.

Who said Tony doesn't know how to market himself.
Your right Asbel, GM got a woody when Tony made his decision, no GM was the one that probably handed him a brown envelope under the table at diner time.
Good Morning

Keep buying foriegn. The amounts of money the big three put back into the local economies was not seen by the foriegn buying public. Maybe Toyota will ante up the extra money to keep this US sport alive. And the music venues and the children's hospitals and the training centers for our young up and comers. Guess I can go on and on. But you get the point.

August 28, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Perhaps we are going full circle.....reduce the size and control of the sport and return to home grown teams instead of mega teams......race what you brought. (I was temporarily in Utopia)

August 28, 2008  08:28 AM ET

It might help the auto makers if they could actually run cars that look *something* like vehicles they sell.....

Q - How do you make a small fortune in racing?
A - Start with a big fortune.

Much like the housing market, anybody with half a brain had to realize that at some point the costs couldn't forever keep going up many times higher than income and inflation before everything just crashes.

The "Big 3" are in really bad shape. Pouring 100's of millions of dollars into NASCAR when they are losing billions and still can't make a competitive street car is probably not the smartest thing to be doing.

I enjoy all forms of auto racing, including NASCAR, but the chances of me buying a Monte Carlo, Fusion, or Avenger just because I saw a car on the track with that name on it are slim to none (let's face it, there's nothing at all "stock" on the track). I'm going to buy what I feel is the best car for the money that I have to spend. I could care less whether or not I see that car on a track somewhere.

Off the subject: I can't believe this is the only :News" story we are getting this morning.
Come on T and R, get off the ball and on the track!

August 28, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Gotta go off topic here since SI didn't decide to run a story. Did anyone see the interview on ESPN of Edwards saying "If I had the chance to do it again, I may have hit him harder." This is going to turn into ine of those ugly rivalries that gauranteed will remove one of them from the chase. Busch for sure won't back down...we know this. Carl really isn't a bad dude so when he says he is not sorry, you know he has a chip on his shoulder. He is just pumping this thing way up just egging Busch on. Which one do you think is going to get knocked out of the chase? 2 races until the point roll back and it starts. Granted they are on 6 race probation but when did tht stop anyone from riding on a bumper and getting them loose in the turn.

August 28, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Pardon me for repeating myself, but how about racing STOCK cars.

August 28, 2008  09:14 AM ET

The new shoot out should be called "The Cookie Cutter Classic"

August 28, 2008  09:35 AM ET

My husband is a General Manager at a GM store which has been in business for over 30 years and it is ready to go under. People--- keep buying foreign cars, it helps us out so much...........

August 28, 2008  09:36 AM ET

PREACHER, it's actually a smart move by carl...he is banking on the fact that Kyle Busch has a VERY HOT temper and will probably do something so incredibly stupid that NASCAR will take him out of the Chase...thereby paving the way for Edwards to cruise to his Cup Championship.

August 28, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Try stopping selling your cars to employees, relatives, friends of employess, friends of relatives and anyone named Jow at a discount and you'll make more money.

August 28, 2008  09:57 AM ET

True scott, didn't look at it that way. Just baitin the guy and "Poking the Bear" to get him to bury himself. Guess it is best to know what sets your enemy off. Psychological warfare at its best.

August 28, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Preacher I dont see NASCAR really following through and suspending the 2 guys that are keeping them in the news. What stinks is, finally we get some good rivialry and the idiots in the ivory tower feel like they need to get involved and water it all back down. Let the guys race, let them fight, they dont have to be best friends. If they dont think that a fight is a good thing for this sport they are crazy. It makes for more viewers in a boring race to tune in and see who will get the upper hand this week.

August 28, 2008  10:11 AM ET

They went fishing together the other day.

August 28, 2008  10:23 AM ET

AF SCOTT, Have you noticed that when this sort of thing happens, by chance the affected drivers seem to either qualify next to each other, end up running in the race near each other, etc?
Gonna be fun watching Carl and maybe some hand jesters toward Kyle during the race, just to **** him off!

August 28, 2008  10:26 AM ET

joefordproud and Ohio#88 well said.

I pick the car that is best for me and my budget and gas economy, but I pick from the original three, mostly GM. I will continue to do that as long as I can..

August 28, 2008  10:26 AM ET

JK, you think Carl gave kyle a 'Stinky Bug Eyed Spinning Lure' to use for their fishing excursion?
LOL
