Warner to start final preseason game

Kurt Warner will start at quarterback in the Cardinals final game of the preseason Friday night, but coach Ken Whisenhunt isn't saying who will hold the job after that. Coaches are going with Warner against the Broncos because he's taken fewer snaps this preseason than Matt Leinart has, Whisenhunt said. Warner has played 30 snaps to Leinart's 57, and coaches want to take a longer look at Warner with the starting unit. Leinart could play a brief time with the backup offensive line, Whisenhunt said.

Really....does it matter? Will they win 7 games? Probably not. Who knows...? Not me. But I know this much......they are not good enough to beat Dallas, New York Giants or even the Saints. So be real, and just enjoy the effort that - you see. Peace.

well they are better with Kurt than Matt. Wisenhunt will get fired for the teams poor record not the USC party boy. At least he is smart enough to realize Warner gives him the best chance to win. Doubtful they will be a .500 team though. you never know the G-men caught lightning in a bottle and look what they did.

Ken will you make up your mind already....

August 28, 2008  08:59 AM ET

He doesn't want to mess with Leinart. It's not good to have every coed on the West Coast mad at you ...

Warner starting this last preseason game means that Leinart is probably going to be the regular season starter.

I agree with your sentiment though. Warner should be starting now so Leinart can learn. I can understand a guy wanting to start, but if I were Leinart, I'd play it cool right now. Learn from a good veteran and when you have everything digested, become the team leader. So many potentially good QBs start right away and just get too rattled, which ultimately messes up their heads because fans turn against them.

If Leinart wasnt a 1st round pick, he would definitely be benched for Warner and its crazy to see just how bad Leinart has to play for Warner to be given the job. He had 27 TDs lsat year, thats 3 times more than Vince Young threw the entire season last year yet they insist on putting Leinart in there?

August 28, 2008  10:07 AM ET

I think they'll start Matt, even though Kurt probably deserves it.

Bond - they are not as good as the NYG, Dallas or the Saints....but they are good enough to win the West and get to the post-season.

I think this decision is to take the heat off the coaches. If Warner performs well then they start him in the season opener. I DON"T think this is what they want. I think their plans have been to start Leinart but Warner hasn't given them any reason to bench him. If Warner has a bad game then the heat is off of them and Leinart starts. IMO, Warner plays well and starts, and he should. He gives them the best chance to win. Leinart at this point in his career is just not ready. Some quarterbacks are ready right out of the gate (Manning, Brady) and some take time (Plunkett, Warner).

Isn't this wonderful if your a member of the Cardinals - you get all the way to the last pre-season game and the head coach won't acknowledge who the starting QB is - no wonder why they stink !!!

August 28, 2008  11:45 AM ET

It really is time for Whiz to just come out and say who the starter is....

August 28, 2008  12:08 PM ET

With that schedule it doesn't look good for 'zona no matter who starts.

August 28, 2008  12:15 PM ET

Perfect way to get Leinart back as the everyday starter. Good philosophy.

August 28, 2008  01:08 PM ET

They aren't good enough to win the West - that would mean they'd need to beat Seattle twice. I'm not ready to go that far, although Seattle's running game looks very weak.

August 28, 2008  01:26 PM ET

I think the Cards are good enough to compete with Seattle for the West. I'm not predicting it necessarily, but I think they have a shot if they stay healthy

August 28, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Does this mean the Cards will soon be looking for a new QB of the future?

Warner's better, but Leinart's definitely the QB of the future.

August 28, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Leinart sucks. He should at least be even if not head and shoulders above a backup QB who hasn't been consistently good since '02. This is one example as to why the Cardinals have been bad for so long.
