Angels-Jays deal in works?

Five days before Monday's trade deadline, the Angels continue to pursue a veteran shortstop as insurance in case Erick Aybar is injured. The team has targeted three Toronto players, slick-fielding John McDonald, former Angel David Eckstein and Marco Scutaro, as well as Baltimore's Juan Castro and Cleveland's Jamey Carroll. No team will just hand the Angels a quality shortstop, so the asking price, even for backups, is high.

Hey, maybe they can play one of their extra Outfielders at SS?

August 28, 2008  06:42 AM ET

The Red Sox could trade them Lugo?

August 28, 2008  07:07 AM ET

I can't see the Jays trading McDonald or Scutaro right now. McDonald is the managers choice to run out there everyday and Scutaro, even though a bench player really, has seen action as a starter almost every game this year and has done a really good job. Eckstein, a signing by JP that made no sense, is the odd man out and would mostly likely want to be moved. Especially to a contender.

No maybe they get lucky and get rid of Coco

August 28, 2008  08:16 AM ET

How can Jeter ground into a DP if he is at second base in this picture? ****.

McDonald is a light hitter but plays great D, Eckstein is a "Rudy" type guy. i never wanted to go up against a team with a "Rudy" on it in the playoffs.

we will take tory hunter no less

August 28, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Eckstein was a kep part of their championship season. The guy has more heart in his game than any random 10 big leaguers put together. He is the same as Theriot of the Cubs. Complete professional. Except that having him would make them better (potentially against my Cubbies), I would love to see them bring him back.

It'd be nice to see Eckstein return to the Angels....

O's will give away Castro and a bag of peanuts!!!

August 28, 2008  12:51 PM ET

The O's should play without a SS and play a 4th "rover" outfielder for now!!

August 28, 2008  12:58 PM ET

I'll trade JP for a napkin

August 28, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Odd, I thought baseball's trade deadline was weeks ago? Why even have a trade deadline if there are still deals being made as we head into September?

August 28, 2008  01:47 PM ET

baseball's non-waiver tade deadline was a few weeks ago but the waiver deadline is approaching. because it has become so hard to get a player through waivers the waiver deadline had become nearly obsolete until this sason where we saw a few big names moved...maddux and dunn
