For those thinking that with the passing of the international transfer deadline on Aug. 15, the Marlon James deal was dead, think again. A creative shell game may yet see the St. Vincent and the Grenadines native land in San Jose. According to San Jose manager Frank Yallop, James is set to sign for USL-1 side Vancouver. This will give the Quakes a chance to see James in person before deciding if they want to sign him, and they have until Sept. 15 to do so, since that is the deadline for signing players from the USL. And with San Jose already putting in a discovery claim on James, they don't have to move on the player right away.

Who cares?

Well he's a great player. IN MALAYSIA!! Come on, can't the MLS do better than this?

P.S. I love the "creative shell games" MLS teams have to play. I've been following the league since the beginning and don't understand the player transfer rules. What the hell is a discovery claim? How did Toronto have the ability to block the McBride to Chicago deal?

Agree with you on that one Pawn. That creative shell games line almost got me in trouble at work for laughing too loud and disrupting my colleagues.

Where do they find these guys and why do they go after them!??!

August 28, 2008  06:54 PM ET

If they would've said "Marlon Brandon" (may he rest in peace) they would've gotten my attention! But, Marlon ... who?

I have been waiting for this signing so I can get the shirt.

MLS needs to figure out something where they can at least compete with some halfway decent leagues. There should be no way the USL has better buying power than the higher tier league, but they do. There should be no way we lose our national team players to the likes of Belgium, Norway, and Finland.

I get that they are growing the league, but I think the money is there and wants to be spend on some talent. There has to be a time when you have to put up or shut up.

I dont understand why this is on here...

I am an Earthquakes fan and I am looking forward to this signing. But to put it among the rumors of the rest of the world...???

I have seen his videos on youtube, and although he is "a good player...in MALYASIA", all of his goals are world class. Understandably, malaysian soccer is CRAP, but a guy who can stand out greatly is worth looking at.

Pawn> Since the league pretty much owns all the contracts, and holds exclusive negotiating rights- teams are given an "allocation order". Its kind of like a waiver system, but if MLS sells the contract of a big-time player for your club, your club is "owed' an allocation. Toronto was at the top of the allocation list (as expansion teams usually are, San Jose picked up Peguero Jean Phillipe, who played give games), so they had first go on McBride. McBride decided he only wanted to play in Chicago or Columbus, so TFC had to be compensated to "pass" on McBride.

And David James- read the article. USL doesn't have anywhere near the "buying power" of MLS. It is a transfer window technicallity that has to do with James contract at Kedah that prevented him from going to the 'Quakes directly.

This guy will be a Quake on Sept 14th.

ibleedteal- sounds like the MLS is the toughest league in the world (all sports, including NFL) to be a GM,
seems like a stupid way to try to attract talent also, what decent player wouldn't care whether he went to NE Revolution or Dallas? especially when teams have specific needs to fill. seems like theyre concerned with "parity" instead of growing the league
