GM takes blame for failed Yanks

Brian Cashman was not ready to itemize what has gone wrong with his design for the Yankees. There will be time for that soon enough, unless they make an unlikely surge to the postseason. But Cashman, the general manager, took full responsibility for the Yankees' disappointing season when asked how much blame he deserved. "All of it," he said. "The bottom line is I'm the G.M. If you want to clear this out of the way, this is not a Joe Girardi issue. We have a terrific hitting coach in Kevin Long. I think we have extremely talented players. I've put together a club that is where it's at, and I'm responsible for that." Cashman defended Girardi, the manager, and Long without being asked, and he said the team had been hard to watch as it played "brutal baseball." Cashman is unsigned past this season, but given his solid working relationship with ownership, especially the co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner, he is expected to return if he wants to stay.

Cashman, it's not your fault. As much as I disagree with some of your moves ultimately it is up to the players to perform and you got some dogs, homey, lol.

Money buying supposed best players, as you and Yanks fans found out, is not the best way to rebuild your teams. For the longest time the farm system was not producing enough everyday players and pitchers. It's doing better but the bang for your buck sucks compared to teams like Twins and the Brewers.

I agree with him protecting the prospects. However, there are many other signings that I may have questioned. Giambi has never earned his massive contract. Re-upping A-Rod to that ridiculous contract was a joke. The organization would have been netter off letting him walk and using 25 milllion/season to add 3 other very good players. He will NEVER be a true Yankee, despite his regular season stats. Cashman also let his starting rotation become a joke. He has nothing after the ancient Mussina and Pettitte. He was right to protect Hughes and Kennedy, but why not sign or trade for another proven veteran to take some heat off of those kids? It is tough enough playing in New York as a youngster, much less be counted on as a proven starter so early in a career. He should have spent large or traded for pitching help instead of praying the likes of Rasner, Ponson and Giese would save his hump.

Way to man u p Cash, but everyone knows who is to blame...their name begins with Stein..and ends with Brenner....

August 29, 2008  09:28 AM ET

As a manager, that's all you could ask for in a GM...take the heat off the team...class move (finally) by Cashman.

August 29, 2008  09:36 AM ET

We put way too much pressure on the offense. We gave them lousier pitching than usual and said hey carry us for a while until these guys learn to pitch in the majors. Too bad Kennedy never got it together, and Hughes had 1 QS before tanking

Joec-
every GM makes a mistake here or there. He counted on the youngsters to get it done because in the middle of a pennant race last year they came up big. Rasner, Ponson, and Giese have shown at times that they can be good, they just cannot pitch good teams with patient hitters. (Red Sox, Angels)

August 29, 2008  09:48 AM ET

actually Rasner has been pretty good all around, he had a couple of rough outings, and yes, better hitting teams hit better, but he has been good.

Oh, and I welcome Cash back next year, he does a good job when left to do his job.

August 29, 2008  10:25 AM ET

It's not Cash's fault Kennedy pitches scared and 10 guys got hurt.

No, they will have to pay a premium for a loyal and useful executive that didn't throw away the future to try and salvage this one year.

I think this season is a success for the Yankees and management finally put in place a plan to give us a realistic chance at winning the WS in the very near future. Keeping the prospects may still prove to be a great move and they had so much cash tied up in contracts set years ago that changing anything would have had little impact in the big picture of things. At the end of this season a ton of payroll is dropped to make room for big free agents who will put us back into contention. And lets face it, take away the injury to Wang who is arguably good enough himself to make up the 5 game deficit in the wild card and we would be in the playoffs without much of a rotation. So really in the big scheme of things this season may very likely be one of those one step backwards for two steps forwards kind of years. I'd prefer that than the last 8 years of having glimmers of hope that amounted to nothing.

We don't need any more bats in the lineup...we need STARTING PITCHING...are you listening Hank? Bueller.....Bueller....

August 29, 2008  04:14 PM ET

Do you suppose that Cashman would also be willing to take the blame for other teams as well? The Tigers, for example, could use a scapegoat for their underperforming season.

Or is this a case of someone confessing to a crime which he did not commit.

August 29, 2008  04:29 PM ET

Since when are injuries the fault of the GM? Sometimes there's just nobody to blame.
