Wannstedt building recruiting base

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt has been lauded for his recruiting efforts over the past four years, thus raising expectations for the Panthers. But all that stockpiled talent has not yielded much success. Wannstedt has been patiently building a foundation, focusing most notably on the offensive and defensive lines. Now, on the eve of his fourth season, the Panthers finally seem to have enough experience and depth to become annual contenders for the Big East title.

Pitt sucks!!!

Wann-stache hasn't won because he couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. look at his record... Chicago, Miami (he won using Jimmy's players, but it finally caught up with him) and now Pitt. I wonder how long it'll be before Pitt realizes that the Wann-stache just isn't quite up to it!

pitt's had good players. Just goes to show good recruits don't mean a thing if you can't coach. Poor pitiful pitt!

he was awful in the NFL, and he's been awful in college. The "Zook factor" is his main problem. All the talent in the world can't make a guy a good game day coach.

My only question is...if a miracle of all miracles occurs and Pitt wins 8-9 games this year...then follows it up with 9-10 next year....we will ever hear from some of the "can't let go crowd" anymore.

The biggest mistake Pitt has made in the last few years was re-hiring Steve Peterson as AD. Peterson came to Pitt in the late 90's, decide he was going to "re-brand" the school with a new logo and new colors, even going so far as not allowing the media to refer to the school as "Pitt" anymore. Peterson also brought in **** coach Walt Harris and lead the unpopular campaign of tearing down Pitt stadium and moving the team to Heinz Field (which might sound awesome, but couldn't suck any worse for students). So after Peterson comes in and spins our program around like a contestant in a dizzy-bat race, he then up and leaves for Nebraska. A few years later, Nebraska realizes what a **** he is and fires him. Haha, right? He got what he deserved, right? Nope, not right. The geniuses at Pitt decided to hire him back as AD, despite the fact that in his absence our basketball team has become a national power and our football team is somewhat headed back up to where it once was. Within days of Peterson's return, Wannstedt is offered a very lucrative extension, despite going 5-6, 6-6, 5-7 in his three years there. Less than 2 months after that, Paul Rhoads, probably the best defensive coordinator in the country and the man who should have been selected as the head football coach over Wannstedt, leaves for Auburn where he's sure to be appreciated. So long story short, the problems with Pitt's football team has nothing to do with recruiting players, it's all about the bone-head decision making of those at the very top of the ladder at Pitt.....

It wasn't until Wannstedt took over the defensive calls in the latter part of last year that Pitt picked up the pace on defense. In the upset of WVU, Pitt gave up less than 200 yds to a hoopie offense averaging 450 a game. Auburn can have Paul Rhodes. The Panthers replaced him with Phil Bennett. A former head coach with the credentials to go with it.

No doubt that the Panthers need to have a breakout season, but I will wait til after this year before I make juddgement on a head coach that lives & breathes Pitt football.

Sure worked for them today didn't it?

August 30, 2008  09:02 PM ET

Then again Phil Bennett had what kind of a record at SMU these last few seasons?

Wannstedt must have pictures of somebody doing some very bad things. There's no way to explain way this prick has a job coaching.

In all honesty, at some point you have to reach the conslusion it isn't the top recruits of one of the best recruiing programs in the Big East letting down the coaching staff, but vice aersa.
