Blazers: Fernandez will play a lot

Back home from the Olympics, where he was an assistant coach for Team USA, Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan on Thursday could finally reveal the two-week struggle he endured in Beijing. There were sleepless nights. A self-imposed muzzle on his emotions. And the uneasiness of choosing an allegiance. All because of Rudy Fernandez. The high-energy shooting guard for Spain, who will join the Blazers this month, excelled during the Olympics, which included a team-high 22 points in the gold medal loss to the Ameicans. And after getting a front-row view for many of Spain's games, McMillan said Fernandez, 23, is so talented that he will "definitely" play, and play a lot, for the Blazers.

The only problem might be playing time. With that many high quality young players, you just hope that everyone is on board with the "team before self" attitude that McMillan brings.

Team wants to win. They will be fine if he performs well. He is a solid player.

Looks as if Portland's rebuilding plan will finally move forward this year.
Maybe they're not yet up to the level of, say, San Antonio, but just as San Antonio's modern team was built around Duncan and Ginobili, Portland is following suit with Oden and Fernandez.
Heck, maybe it will be good to compare Rudy Fernandez to Manu Ginobili - they're both shooting guards, both from Spanish-speaking countries, and the length of their names only differs by one letter - both have a 4-letter first name, and 9 vs 8 letters for the last name.

wow they have similiar name sizes and speak the same language? they are almost the same player now practically, and oden is the new duncan! good work!........................................................... ................................

Hey, you gotta give me credit for trying to come up with something interesting. :)

i doubt he will perform in the NBA like he did in the olympics... Just don't see it. sorry...

Jay-
I kow you are projecting forwards but......

Oden hasn't played one game in the NBA yet
and although Roy is GREAT & Aldridge had a breakout year....
the rest of the team is not NBA proven

They aren't a playoff team this coming year & likely won't be able to really challenge for a few years

August 29, 2008  08:43 AM ET

It would have been better if McMillan kept quiet about this. There's a guy in his team who's name is Brandon Roy and almost have the same position. Why didn't he wait after preseason where he can make his overall evaluation of him. That's when he had actually played and meshed w/ his Blazers teammate. You got the guy and you don't need to overhype him for now. Let his game do the talking in the NBA.

This team is stacked with young talent. Good luck on finding decent minutes for all of them.

Hard to disagree, even though Blazers may be the most entertaining bunch to watch, maybe them and Phillies.
I think they are still a veteran frontcourt and a veteran backcourt player away from being a contender

August 29, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I think he will take a few years to be good.

If I had a dollar for all the "can't miss" prospects that missed, I'd probably spend a lot less time on FanNation. He's a guard. Call me when he does something. Every player in the league was a Superstar in High School and/or college. But there are a lot more potential "Where are they now" stories than All-Stars.

This guy played really well in the Olympics. Last season, everytime Por played Lakers, I was hoping he was coming into the game all the time. And when he was subbed, it was very brief 'cuz he was making terrible plays. Good luck to Nate and Rudy both.

With this new rumor plus the unexplainable addiction of luke jackson, steven hill and the Tatum dude...I guess the trail blazers are finally getting rid of steve blake

they already said Roy will play PG a lot more than he played last season...

August 29, 2008  12:09 PM ET

I can see a coupe in the blazers camp..they won't pass him the ball or cover up when the sharper NBA guards blow past him... he will be a bust.. just because the coach can't keep his mouth closed!!!

Rudy's game resembles a young Rip Hamilton because he's constantly moving and can hit outside shots. He's pretty good at attacking the basket as well and loves them lob passes for dunks as seen on YouTube.

But he's a finese player that needs to adjust to the NBA game. Some are comparing him to Manu and/or Kevin Martin.

Also, he needs to learn how to play NBA style defense. I saw too many times during the Olympics that his man goes by him, even though he is right in front of his man.

Overall, Portland will make the playoff this year. Their time has begun.

Hllywd...you can ask your boy Dwight Howard how he felt about getting dunked on by Rudy. It was the same play that Rudy went past Kobe from about 23 feet out. =)

Go ahead hate the Blazers, but they will be winning soon. They will be beating the teams you love.

August 29, 2008  01:01 PM ET

he played well in the olympics no wonder the want to play him

"they already said Roy will play PG a lot more than he played last season..."

Roy is not a point guard.....he is your scoring guard-
you don't just magically become a point guard....totally different mindset
