Merriman's final season in S.D.?

Shawne Merriman will start the season, but he might not finish it. He knows that, and he is not obsessing. He seems neither optimistic nor pessimistic about his chances of still playing in December or January. The widespread belief is that he is making the wrong decision. He has been counseled by former players and his closest advisers to sacrifice this season. By playing at the level he has, which means double digits in sacks, Merriman can make up to an additional $1.5 million in escalators. He is risking not only his '09 salary (currently approximately $3.7 million) but possible future earnings. Signals point to the Chargers not re-signing Merriman when his contract is up after 2009. And if he were to suffer a catastrophic injury, they could release him after this season.

So what exactly is Merriman thinking here, that he'll go out in a blaze of glory? That he'll be remembered by the fans ala Daryl Stingly? Looks like he's made up his mind and no one is going to change it although it seems many have tried.

Morning Lady..I don't know what he is thinking..He wouldn't be remembered for his courage. He will be remembered as a player that took a crazy gamble on his career because he was hard headed..

Is $1.5 million really worth it?

August 29, 2008  08:01 AM ET

Stupid stupid stupid.

August 29, 2008  08:02 AM ET

We as fans dog players for not playing through it (like LT last year against the Pats) and then we are going to bag on Merriman because he decides to. Let's be a little consistant. I myself wouldn't risk it, but the guy's trying to make a go of it and get the surgery after the season.

There's a difference. LT only had about 2 more games at the most to play. And he didn't have 2 ligaments damaged and 4 doctors telling him to get surgery. Merriman expects to play a 16 game season, plus 2 or 3 playoff games on a bad knee? That's crazy. There's nothing to be proud of about that. In the end, he's going to hurt his team more then help them.

He may be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life by then. What about his family? I don't think disabling yourself is worth the $1.5 million. Just my opinion.

August 29, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Still a BIG mistake. Should have listened to the four doctors
Putz! Carolina is coming after your knee this week buddy...
Better re-think your decision.

Merriman's last effective season in the NFL, period. Old 'roid head has a bum knee, and it is doubtful he will get though this season uninjured. No team is going to sign him for large cash with that knee problem either.

Uh huh, I really think he should rethink this..The risk is too high..What is the problem about him having the surgery and sitting out the season? Season vs career? Which one would you choose...

August 29, 2008  08:22 AM ET

He's way too young to be risking everything for only 1.5. With that many doctors and players telling him to take the time and do it right you'd think he listen and take their advice.

Strange and not too bright decision

August 29, 2008  09:04 AM ET

I'll admit the chargers do a good job of choosing talent, but not intelligence I'm afraid.

August 29, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Yeah, LT dogging it in the playoffs with a chance for the superbowl is way different than SM trying to play a season needing surgery. IF the Chargers cared about this guy, they would not clear him to play and put him on IR so he has no choice but to get treatment or surgery. Come on man, 4 doctors say dont do it.

August 29, 2008  09:41 AM ET

He needs to preserve his body, he's a young guy and hopefully has many years ahead of him in the nfl.....the $$ will come

Careful with the "LT" thing. KP will come down on you with claws extended. LOL!!

WickWire

I agree, the team needs to be forceful with this guy b/c obviously he is not capable of making a wise decision here

August 29, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Question for anyone, is this guy broke or something? Will he not get paid if he sits out a year? 1.5 mill is nothing to the 20 mil he could get if he is healthy again, and all it would take is one strong double digit sack year for him to get crazy paid by the OAKLAND Raiders, who love players with bad wheels.

August 29, 2008  09:56 AM ET

He needs to look at this as strictly a business decision. A smart company understand that you have to plan for the market in the future not just the present. He could play the whole season, but do so much damage he could never play again. Does it make more sense to get 1.5 mill this year, or get a multi year contract with more guaranteed money after sitting out year?

August 29, 2008  10:04 AM ET

if he gets hurt, final year in sd. if he under performs, final year in sd. he has to put up solid numbers and not get permanently injured. its a big risk for a minor reward. having surgery would make more sense.

August 29, 2008  10:17 AM ET

He has heart. Which means stupidity sometimes. As dumb as it sounds we will forget about him quick. So risking this doesnt matter. He made a promise or whatever however dont risk your daily life for one year. Which you wont get money for if you get seriously injured by the end of the season because he thinks the owners are gonna pay him later on....sorry Shawn no. You injur yourself thru stupidity they will see their investment gone and they will release you
