Pirates face difficult decision

The Pirates face a difficult decision this winter about Doug Mientkiewicz. For Mientkiewicz, deciding whether or not to return next season may be even tougher. The team hasn't approached Mientkiewicz about a contract for 2009. General manager Neal Huntington prefers to conduct that sort of business in the offseason. Without knowing what -- or even if -- the Pirates might offer him, Mientkiewicz already is battling mixed emotions.

Did I just jump into a time machine and go back to a time that Doug Mientkiewicz was relevant?

Who?

August 29, 2008  08:55 AM ET

I think the more difficult decision is whether to field a team for 2009 or just say the hell with it....

They need to sign some veterans with value......that way they'll have people to trade to Boston or New York for nothing next summer.

August 29, 2008  10:39 AM ET

I don't think Dougie will be going back to Boston any time soon. :-)

Welcome to being a Pirates fan! This is what constitutes news for our super crappy team.

I also was battling mixed emotions, then I got a prescription from my doctor and now everything seems just fine!

Poor Doug. It's an awful burden--choose to stay w/ a perennial cellar dweller or go w/ a better club, probably in a reduced role. This guy's stock is up. he had a decent year at the plate and played !b, 3b and OF. Color him marketable.

He could be used in NYM or LAA

Angola might take the Gold medal in hockey at the Winter Games before the Pirates have another winning season. They have Al Bundy kind of luck.

These are decisions that explain wht the Pirates are doormats in baseball !!! Although I am extremely happy with Jason Bay in a Red Sox uniform !!!

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?

August 30, 2008  08:45 AM ET

I'm not able to get the Pirates.Does anyone know what is Avg HR RBI'S are?

September 10, 2008  02:57 PM ET

That's exactly why this is the first year of my life(with a good memory), that I did not go to a Pirates game, who have the BEST BALL PARK in America.

Doug is a good player and leader on the team. Those that follow the Pirates know this. But also knowing the Pirates, they dump their good players and get nothing in return. They should have dumped those over-priced, do-nothing pitchers at the end of last year because they are the reason we no longer have Bay and Nady and who knows who else. It's been 15 years of this garbage and the "leadership" still hasn't learned. Good luck to Doug. Hope he gets on a winner.
