UGA: No Heisman campaigns

In Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford, Georgia coach Mark Richt knows he has a couple of star players of the first order. In fact, he said, they might have surpassed the two Davids, Greene and Pollack, in across-the-board popularity. But if either one is to become a serious Heisman Trophy candidate this season it won't be because of any publicity machine Georgia cranks up. We never try to create a star," Richt said. "That was our philosophy at Florida State. We had two guys win the Heisman and one guy finish second, but we never went off the chain trying to promote somebody. We let his numbers and his performance dictate it. We felt like, "if you win [games] and you play well, you have a chance to win it, son." We're not going to throw up a bunch of billboards all over the place."

Great....you do that holmes. Let the press do their job and you do yours. And let the players win the games. Then you can take alot of credit. We know...so go ahead and win the title. Prove to everyone that you can get the job done boy.

August 29, 2008  06:06 AM ET

Well, Stafford should definitely NOT be considered a Heisman candidate. Show us some decent numbers first, i.e. if he has a good season this year then maybe next season he should be considered but there are better QBs, like 5 in the Big XII than Stafford.

Are you telling me they didn't promote Herschell Walker back in the day?

August 29, 2008  12:26 PM ET

They didn't have to promote Herschell.. And I think maybe next year Moreno won't need it either.

I agree... Stafford has not shown me anything. If anything, he is an average QB.

August 29, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Knowshon will probably turn pro next year..... if he does not get injured or just has a average year.... Of course, I think he is a little overrated.

August 29, 2008  02:00 PM ET

Did you even watch the cocktail party last year Murdoc? Knowshon rushed for 180 yds. Florida's weakness last year was the secondary too, not the LB's or DL.

Stafford's numbers should improve to be considered a Heisman candidate; he's just getting the pub b/c the pro scouts love him so much.

August 29, 2008  02:26 PM ET

No way they are more popular than the David's... I swear they were both there for atleast 7 years

You sound just as ignorant as the people who call Tebow overrated.

August 29, 2008  08:44 PM ET

I think Knowshons an incredible player, but we forget that he didnt really break out until mid season last year. it'll be interesting to see him go 13 games under the spotlight, with defenders looking for him all season. I say by the time to cocktail party rolls around, he's going to be pretty beat up, as well as the rest of the Georgia team.

August 29, 2008  08:53 PM ET

I just want to win games this year. Individual awards, sure they're nice, but nothing like a championship. If Knowshon stays healthy and plays well, and happens to get the Heisman, great, it would be icing on the cake if UGA wins the NC. Otherwise, it is just something to add to the laundry list of trash talking items when we tangle with the OSU fans on FN.

August 29, 2008  08:56 PM ET

Knowshon will stay to get his degree, which means he will stay next year with the insurance contract. Stafford will stay unless he wins the NC. Chances are both will be back next year unless UGA pulls off a most remarkable year. I have been saying next year is the year anyways. If we make it to the NC game this year we would be similar to OSU last year - peaking early. O-line needs another year, and the talented freshmen WRs need another year to learn the plays.

August 29, 2008  08:58 PM ET

Knowshon runs for 1900 yards and King gets 800 this year. Samuel pulls in 300. AJ grabs 10 tds and MM gets 7. Durham 4. Nuff said.

August 29, 2008  08:59 PM ET

Stafford 27 TDs, 10 INTs, 4 rushing TDs.

I agree... never said Knowshon waasn't a good player. Just a little too much hype for showing out in half a season. We'll see what he's made of this year.

August 29, 2008  09:28 PM ET

The Heisman is the most overrated award in sports. Just wait until Tebow gets drafted in the 5th round as a fullback or H back.

Almost as ignorant as being a FSU fan... Free Shoes University! Get a team and maybe then you can say something.

Do you hang out with eyesWIDEopen??? Now that was an ignorant statment!

Tim Tebow had a great year last year and I expect Florida to be a high scoring machine. Only a few teams have a chance to beat them (4 or 5 teams). If Florida split those they go 10-2. That being said I do believe Georgia can go 10-2 as well...so the winner of the Cocktail party most likely will represent the east. I think from seeing the game last night that USCe is overrated. I am keeping a close eye on the UCLA game to see how UT plays. UT could decide the race between UGA and UF by knocking off either team before the cocktail party.

August 29, 2008  10:45 PM ET

We will not lose to UT this year. Even if it is by one point on a field goal in the 6th overtime, we will win that game this year. I would say UGA is more likely to get knocked off by UF or LSU than the Vawls.
