Why Hornets signed Marks
In an effort to help strengthen their front-court depth, the Hornets signed free agent forward/center Sean Marks on Thursday. Terms of his contract were not released. The Hornets are hoping the signing of Marks, a 6-foot-10, 250-pounder who is a nine-year NBA veteran, helps shore up a front court that lacked depth last season. Marks caught the eye of the Hornets during the preseason last year when he scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in 27 minutes. He played in 19 regular-season games last season, shooting 53.5 percent and averaging 3.1 points a game, including a season-high 16 points and career-high 13 rebounds in the Suns' season finale against Portland. Marks, who prefers to play facing the basket, is expected to compete with Hilton Armstrong and Melvin Ely for playing time behind starting center Tyson Chandler.

If they're looking to Marks to be more than the last guy on the bench, the Hornets are in worse shape than they realize.

He will not fix what they need.. he is a player who will add but not lead.

Something does not add up here. The article states that the Hornets need to "shore up a front court that lacked depth last season", but at the same time, Marks "is expected to compete with Hilton Armstrong and Melvin Ely for playing time behind starting center..."
With all those people competing for the center position, how can they be lacking depth? If the front court really is thin, it must be at the forward spots. In that case, shouldn't Marks, and perhaps one or two others, move to power forward instead of standing in line to play behind Chandler?
After all, Marks prefers to play "facing the basket", which means he would be better at power forward.

I dont understand the Hornets. How can they possibly let Pargo go? is it because they wanted to sign Marks??? Marks has to be had for cheap, and pargo was an essential backcourt piece for CP3.
You have to trust their decisions because they have been great the last 2 years, but I dont understand this offseason for the Hornets

This does not make sense at all. You want to make your team better and you go out and get a 9 year bench veteran who has not proven anything at all. Dumbfounded.?????????

I follow the NBA fairly closely & I've never heard of this guy -
that being said, I looked up his stats & career & if this is the Hornets idea of imrpoving the team I think the GM needs to go

There was a guy name Theo Ratliff who was a free agent. He would have been way better fit then Marks. If they know that they needed to shore up the front court then should have gone all out for Ratliff.

I agree they definitely should have gone for Ratliff.

Well, let's see. He's been in the league 9 years. The Hornet s will be his 5th team. He has a career 3 point per game average. And most people on this site never heard of him. Then again, it's August and there isn't much to report.

Fellas its not like we are filling a starting spot or giving the guy millions. Its just a very small move to help with depth. He still has to go through training camp and survive the cuts to even be on the team so everyone calm down. You all need to stop criticizing the Hornets moves. Why fix something that aint broke? The ONLY thing that kept us from going to the conference finals last year was missing wide open shots in the playoffs (trust me i was at game 7 against the Spurs and we missed a bunch including a couple that would have tied us up after battling back) and the Hornets made the best possible signing to fix taht in getting Posey. Yes it may have been a little much for a guy that age and he wont do to much during the season for us but come playoff time he HITS his open shots and plays great team defense... Hornets will be in Finals... prob against the Celtics...

Mark si sgood WHEN HE PLAYS. I don't think thatthe Suns gave him enough opportunity to show his skills, but I blame that more on Mike D'Antoni than anyone else.

Nothing is broken but if you have a chance to make it better why not do that. Why waste your minimum money and a roster spot for somebody who has been in the NBA for 9 years but yet had no impact? Why don't you give that spot to somebody younger and develop him or sign the best front court free agent out there that will really help your team. Sean Marks is not the answer. Why not get guys like Mike Miller or Rudy Gay to help you hit your outside shots. You lost Pargo already. Posey will be a big help.

When it comes to getting to the "next level", there's chemistry and then there's alchemy. Could be this is a meaningless acquisition. Unless it is a genius get by a coaching staff that seems to know what it's doing...

SKybill, this is quite possibly tru..We just never got to see enough of him against quality opposition..Can't be worse than Ely or Armstrong though...Hornets better hope Tyson stays healthy for the whole year

Guys, guys please were talking about a career stiff journeyman. I can't believe I'm even commenting on Sean freakin Marks. The guys has been, is and will always be somewhere between the last man on the bench and the 15th guy on the roster.

The west still belong to the lakers. People got to remember the lakers lead in most the games against boston except game 6. With a healthy Andrew Bynum, determined Kobe Bryant and Paul Gasol, the lakers will crush the west and win the NBA title this coming up year. Every team has downfalls before they reach the top. The finals I believe will motivate this lakers team to reach the top.
