Angels-Jays trade hits snag

The Angels and the Blue Jays were closing in on a deal Friday that would have returned popular shortstop David Eckstein to Anaheim. But talks stalled, apparently when another club also expressed serious interest in the 2006 World Series most valuable player. The Rays and Red Sox may be among the teams interested in Eckstein. The Dodgers, who also need depth in the infield, are among the teams monitoring the situation, although a deal is considered a longshot.

Eckisten would be a very nice addition for most teams. Solid, little player. Didn't work out with the Blue Jays. They didn't even need him anyway before they signed him.

Red Sox have Lowri they dont need to pick this guy up

I agree with the guy above me. The BoSox dont need Eckstein. One team that could use him is none other than......St Louis(former team)

its a saturday , what do u expect , its always slow on a saturday

the dodgers need him the most because they need some offense in their lineup besides Manny and Kent.the red sox and angels don't need him at all.

August 30, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Johnny MAc is way better than eckstein why sign him in the first place?

August 30, 2008  12:37 PM ET

It's not really a "snag" when other teams want him. That's called "competition." Here's hoping JP actually makes a good trade.... but I won't hold my breath.

August 30, 2008  01:22 PM ET

The red sox need pitching, not infield positions they already have promise in.

August 30, 2008  01:43 PM ET

^^^ What up with the name pal he hasnt even played three years left to be going to abritration.. the Sox have him for a while.

August 30, 2008  01:44 PM ET

But the Sox need bullpen and maybe a starter but a starter is a bit of a reach since they have good depth

August 30, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Bravesfan - No we don't need him. His range is gone completely. Our defense (and ERA) suffered considerably because of his rapidly shrinking range last year. Let the other teams looking for insurance spend prospects on him.

Yeah....and how does Eckstein, and his career OPS+ of 89 help there? Or anywhere for that matter? Eckstein's best season, of his entire career, offensively, was 2002 when he had an OPS+ of 101. Meaning that in his career year, he was 1% better than the average player offensively. He's terrible.

Eckstien is a great late season addition for a contender. If I were the Rays, I would be interested in him.

August 30, 2008  03:38 PM ET

I hate that. The Angels would be a good fit for Eck.

August 30, 2008  04:36 PM ET

Eck is a solid pro and a proven post-season performer. He could help a contender down the stretch and in the clubhouse.

CF2 is right...his range killed us in STL last year. I'm not sure he was ever a fit in Toronto, but he could help a team down the stretch. Long term, he probably needs to move to 2B if he wants to play every day somewhere.

August 30, 2008  05:26 PM ET

it's too bad that everybody seems to be blocking the Rays from getting anybody. You wanna talk about collusion? The teams like the Red Sox and Yuckeees can't stand the competition!!!

August 30, 2008  06:51 PM ET

There's some speculation that the Dbacks are the other team, actually.

September 1, 2008  01:34 AM ET

Awe..the Dbacks got him....it would have been a nice homecoming....but stick with Brandon Woods and give him the chance to shine.
