Nash skeptical of Suns' plan

Steve Nash, 34, is receptive to the idea of getting more rest. He played in 81 of 82 games last year and averaged 34.3 minutes per game. To put that in perspective, Dallas point guard Jason Kidd, 35, was the only player older than Nash to log as many minutes. Nash points out that San Antonio point guard Tony Parker had fresh legs for the playoffs last May in part because he missed three weeks and 13 games of the regular season with an ankle injury. Of course, Parker is also eight years younger than Nash. "I feel like you can always use the rest," Nash says. "If you can get to the postseason well rested, it's perfect. But you can't always afford to do that." And there's the rub. Is Phoenix good enough that it can sit Nash for 12 games? "I don't know," Nash says. "Probably not." There's no probably about it.

Until he learns to play some 'D', all the rest is just talk. No rings! No Championship! No way!!!

Nash should be skeptical of the entire organization at this point. Trading Marion for Shaq was one thing, but trading Kurt Thomas for ... nothing? They no longer have an identity, have morphed into an old team, and - argue if you want - will be a prime candidate to miss the playoffs next season.

Given the direction of the current front office, the Suns will be lucky to rest Nash 12 MINUTES. It's pretty tough to build a Champion on the cheap.

Tell it like it is, I really wish you wouldn't tell it like it is....I had a bad dream a few nights back that in January, Nash collapsed because of playing so many minutes. As the paramedics were reviving him, Terry Porter, looked over at Goran Dragic and Sean Singletary with a grimace and promptly told the paramedics to drag Nash down to the scorers table to check back in...

In the same dream, Robert Sarver comes and tells Kerr that Philly just offered Theo Ratcliff and a electric wheelchair for Amare Stoudamire. Kerr nods slowly in agreement as Terry Porter stands with his mouth open in Amazement...

I am really hoping for 5th or 6th place in the conference...

This sounds like a vast right wing conspiracy to me

Hey Nash......theres a spot in Charlotte with your name on it......

That's actually doable. If Porter is able to instill a defensive mindset, we could be pleasantly surprised. We know what they're capable of offensively.

Hllywd;

I still think they have plenty of talent...It is the age and depth that concerns me..Sarver's penny-penching and Kerr's decision making has put this team on a slippery slope to mediocrity and we just don't have the draft picks (Don't get me started on this...) to change course.

The only halfway decent moves Kerr has made was to get Matt Barnes and Grant Hill on the cheap...Everything else has ranged from suspect to stupid.

August 30, 2008  10:21 AM ET

ok no one had bashed on the suns moves in trading away quality for tax saving b()llsh1t than me

i agree with matrix about hill and barnes
but i really like the draft pick of lopez and they only reason that happened is bec ause it basically landed in their lap

the suns will be better than people think, dont forget it was that peanut one trick tony that burnt the players out come playoffs with an extremely thin rotation year after year, any time a starter was injured the regulars had to play even more minutes

August 30, 2008  10:23 AM ET

gee, great plan.

August 30, 2008  10:29 AM ET

...which leads us back to the fact that nash will have precious little help at point this season. they seem to have accepted that barbosa is not a decision-making point and will use him at shooting guard this year. dragic is good, but untried at this level, yet they are heavily counting on him heavily this year, handing him the backup role right off the bat. he is too untested, i think. sean singletary was picked up from houston as the third point, but he wont help...nash is right to be concerned...

August 30, 2008  10:46 AM ET

I just can't understand what they're trying to accomplish. Why were they not even interested in Jannero Pargo. They could have gotten him dirt cheap. What about White Chocolate? Delonte West can be had. Instead they shoot themselves in the foot, and if Nash goes down, this isn't even a .500 team.

August 30, 2008  10:54 AM ET

who knows dragic could be good..........ah who am i kidding! steve nash will probably come off the court his knees are bleeding and like 2 minutes later Porter will just send him back on the court

August 30, 2008  11:03 AM ET

...sarver has probably told porter that in an emercency maybe porter could suit up and take the court for a few minutes...all to save a buck....Pargo would've been perfect......

August 30, 2008  11:05 AM ET

... that's emergency , sorry...i need another cup of coffee.....

August 30, 2008  11:05 AM ET

I really want to be believe that Dragic will be decent, but I have yet to read any scouting report that suggests other than he was a waste of draft pick....

The point is that Phoenix put about 8 million total into this unproven second draft pick. That's right, 8 million between his salary, buyout, draft day deal and salary cap penalty. For one million they could have gotten a host of proven players..None great but more than capable of give Nash 15 minutes of rest a game.

Now Phoenix is stuck with the Balkan wonder in case Nash goes down...Kerr better hope Nash stays healthly because the Phoenix fans have seen enough of his poor decision making.

August 30, 2008  11:24 AM ET

How many examples do we need of the stereotypical European player? Sound fundamentally, high basketball IQ, decent post-up shooter, lacks toughness both mentally and physically, defensive skills needed to play at this level are almost non-existent. Unable to contribute immediately, could prove to be a factor in 2-3 years.

I haven't seen this kid, but I've watched his game for years.

August 30, 2008  11:27 AM ET

...dragic is good, an up-and-coming decision-making point guard. his rights were/are owned by tau ceramica, a powerhouse team in spain, but he didn't play for them last season. he was loaned to union olimpija, another decent team, to get playing time cause he couldn't get court time with tau....

August 30, 2008  11:33 AM ET

...and from what it sounds like, dragic will be counted on for 15-20 minutes a nite...

August 30, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Dragic is going to get minutes but the Suns should have gotten a NBA proven backup PG.
