Guillen: Obama has to be president

Manager Ozzie Guillen toed the political line Friday night when asked about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's preference of the White Sox over the Cubs. "I love it," Guillen chuckled. "He has to be our president." But when asked if he would vote for Obama, Guillen chose his words slightly more carefully. "I don't know right now who I'm going to vote for," said Guillen, who earned U.S. citizenship in January 2006. "I've never had an opportunity to vote in the United States, but I appreciate that opinion, and that man's a true Sox fan. I have to tell people in Chicago, don't misunderstand what he wants to say. A lot of people will say if you vote for him, all of a sudden you're a White Sox fan. Some people out there are ignorant and say, 'We're not going to vote for him because he's a White Sox fan.' That will happen. I don't think he needs the White Sox fans' vote. He just told the truth. He likes the White Sox, he always has been a South Sider and I guarantee you a few people here like him, too, like myself." Guillen says he wouldn't seek any perks if Obama is elected to the White House.

Does this crap have to be a story on this crap site?
Grossedout9 | 08/30/08, 10:05 AM

If it is such a crappy site then why don't you try and find one less crappy? Just another way of saying: if you ain't part of the solution then you are part of the problem.

4192jc (Don't give up!) | 08/30/08,

Half agree. If the stories are dumb, don't comment, or at least make some point as too why they are dumb. Then again, I look at the MLB headlines on SI.com, and there always seems to be, oh say, at least five which are more interesting and or baseball related then the same Yankee/Sox/Ozzie Guillen crap they feed this site on a daily basis.

Example...

MLB orders top pick Hosmer off field
Rays thump Orioles, secure first winning season
Mauer's career night gets Twins within ?? of 1st
Report: Feds target relatives of Bonds' trainer
Yankees reveal pricing plans for new ballpark

I mean, come on, who gives two rat **** who the f*ch Ozzie Guillen is honking for president?

I live in Nebraska, which would probably vote 80% for a Bush third term, so my vote doesn't really matter (I am a democrat). McCains' VP pick seems to be kinda a light wieght and would be very scary to have a heartbeat away from the presidency. I don't really like Obama either to be honest. Lotsa rhetoric and little substance. Are these two really the best this country can come up with to lead us?

August 30, 2008  11:34 AM ET

And this is a story for what reason???

August 30, 2008  11:36 AM ET

What do you expect from someone who is from Venezuala? Ozzie hates America almost as much as B. HUSSEIN's Obama's wife.

August 30, 2008  11:48 AM ET

It isn't a sports story ... and who cares who a presidential nominee roots on or who a baseball manager votes for

August 30, 2008  12:20 PM ET

Obama doesn't know any more about baseball than he does politics. It will certainly be a big laugh when the CUBS win the world series and he loses the election.

August 30, 2008  12:46 PM ET

This is not a sports news story. The media, including the tribune, have lost focus on what is real life and what is fantasy life. Ozzie is a lot things, he is not anyone I would ask for advice about anything outside of baseball.

August 30, 2008  12:49 PM ET

As much as I hate what Obama said, I admire him sticking to his stance. Too many politicians these days are flip floppers. Whenever they encounter resistance, they'll "refine" their stance. It is disgusting how people will allow these jackasses to get away with it, too. So it's refreshing to see someone stick to their guns for once. Even if he is one billion percent wrong.

Ozzie, on the other hand, should shut his ****ing trap. Almost everytime he opens his mouth, he causes a damn controversy. The man is lower than pond scum, and he needs to get the **** out of my city. We don't need **** like him. We already have enough of them in alderman's positions and one as Cook County Board President.

Oh, and one should vote for whomever they agree with on policies, not sports affiliations. I won't vote for Obama, but it will be because he has done nothing substantial, not because he chooses to be an ignorant Sox fan.

DanTheMan,

"What do you expect from someone who is from Venezuala? Ozzie hates America almost as much as B. HUSSEIN's Obama's wife."

Let's talk about the wife of your pathetic "war hero" shall we?

You remember her dont you? Here let me refresh your memory ...

She's the spoiled percocet -popping slut who was busted for stealing drugs from her very own charity .. and then got off thanks to a sweetheart deal brokered by her vote-against-better-veterans-healthcare-every-chance-he-gets husband.

I guess I'd love America more too if I grew up with a trust fund and got away with a felony or two eh?

By the way ... why did FAUX News try to edit out McCain saying "I really didn't love America"? youtube.com/watch?v=3RhuGVGF21g&NR=1

I'd either learn a LOT more about your own candidate before you bash someone else's or just shut up.

Especially since I can tear McCain to shreds.

Oh, and by the way ...

Congrats on those 18-1 season and the CHOKE job in the Super Bowl.

And your GED too!

August 30, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Dustygrady,

"Obama doesn't know any more about baseball than he does politics. It will certainly be a big laugh when the CUBS win the world series and he loses the election."

At least he knows enough not to be a Cubs fan!

Newsflash: You're only "lovable losers" for so long until you eventually become just LOSERS - which happened about 80 or so years ago.

And as far as winning a World Series goes . .. my team's been there .. done that.

As recently as 2005.

How about yours?

August 30, 2008  12:57 PM ET

**** McCain and his token female Alaskan sidekick!

It's Obama Time!

August 30, 2008  01:09 PM ET

Hey Monkeygold

When the Cubs are in the World Series waiting for those pathetic White Sox to show up to face them and they never do, Who will be laughing then? You call 2005 recent? After the Cubs win it this year any of "Team Obama's" past achievments will be completely wiped out and forgotten. The same with Obama himself.

August 30, 2008  01:34 PM ET

OBama should be a redsox fan
