Leafs-Panthers trade in works

Bryan McCabe officially should become a Florida Panther in the coming days and Mats Sundin (gasp!) is scheduled to make an appearance in Toronto. After weeks of inactivity, speculation and weariness on the part of Maple Leafs fans who have watched Sundin's decision to let his non-decision on his National Hockey League future play out all summer, some ice should be broken next week. The trade of McCabe to Florida for defenceman Mike Van Ryn is expected to go through on Tuesday. Three days later, Sundin is slated to play in the Festival Cup at the Air Canada Centre, a charity hockey game with proceeds going to Right to Play. Sundin's appearance in Toronto does not guarantee he will declare his intentions for the 2008-09 NHL season, but let's hope he gives a hint of what he plans to do. As for McCabe agreeing to waive his no-movement clause and take his large contract and poor defensive game to the sunny south, the hinge was a $2 million bonus that the Leafs are due to pay on Sept. 1. Tuesday is Sept. 2, so figure the deal to be done then.

Bryan McCabe to Florida? The Leafs are lucky they found somebody that will give them something for him. Good riddance!

McCabe is a decent player, but the knock on him is he is not worth the contract he was given. Still, he will probably do better in Florida out of the Toronto Media and fan scrutiny.
Van Ryn I don't think is any real improvement...except salary wise. The Leafs really must be looking for a deal for a forward with all the defensemen they now own. Certainly D-men are a commodity that they should be able to use for a forward in the near future. I'm not even going to comment on the Sundin part of this story. Why bother?

They still need to turn around and trade a dman or 2 for someone that put the bisket in the basket. It's going to be a long season in the centre of the hockey universe.

Baund-ed, bang on point about a trade or two needing to happen now. McCabe's biggest criticism was his salary. Truth is, he is a decent number 2 defenseman on most teams in the league not named Detroit. McCabe can still anchor a PP, eat lots of minutes and play an edgy game. VanRyn is a body to fill the veteran void left by McCabe, nothing more. Now Trader Cliff must turn a couple of defenseman into a decent forward or two.

Leaf Land lucked out with getting a trading partner here. The only reason Florida wanted him because Bouwmeester is getting traded at the TD this season. He's a replacement. McCabe also doesnt play any D. Example: He scored on his own net with a laser one-timer. LOL.

Why is this a Sundin story?

August 30, 2008  02:20 PM ET

It's called a contract, Roberts.
Clearly T&R is under legal obligation that 40%+ of their stories must deal with the Mats Sundin indecision saga.
I thought that was common knowledge.

I believe T&R could turn the presidential candidates choosing their VP's into a Sundin stroy.

No wait...Here's a news flash.
A player scores on his own team! Outstanding,
What a scintillating revelation. Why don't you e-mail Steve Smith that news BGM?

Can't play D? Yeah...Okay, sure. I suppose if you compare him to Orr, Park, Bourque or Chara...Of course those are the only defencemen in the Boston universe...so yeah...sure, ok BGM.
?
You think it's easy to play up to expectations in Toronto...
Why don't you ask Larry Murphy that question you Epaminondas.

August 30, 2008  03:02 PM ET

LOL,Bauner. McCabe doesnt play D. Thats not news. Everybody knows that. He's a force on the PP yeah, but at 5.75, is that all he brings to the table? JFJ over-paid for this guy cause he posted 19 goals and 49 assists in his contract year. The next year he doesnt even try. Gill plays more D than McCabe. Out of the 2,i'd choose Gill (IF forced to choose).

I did e-mail Steve Smith.......he called me a mo-fo for bringing it up. Playing in Leaf Land you have to bring it every year? Isnt that what athletes are supposed to do Epaminondas,er...i mean Baun-ded? Look at Parrish,he's not in a huge market...he got bought out cause he didnt bring it every year. Toronto is no different!!!!!!!!!!!

August 30, 2008  03:07 PM ET

Toronto is no different!!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna bet?

August 30, 2008  03:15 PM ET

YOu seriously want to have a bet with me,Baun-ded? I will give you a chance to reconsider.

August 30, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Yeah...Name a tougher city to play in then Toronto for a hockey player BGM!

August 30, 2008  03:22 PM ET

Montreal.

August 30, 2008  03:22 PM ET

But that's the only one.

August 30, 2008  03:25 PM ET

Yup,Montreal is up there. Pressure City. What do i win?

August 30, 2008  03:26 PM ET

Briere got booed in Montreal cause he didnt sign there!!!!!!

August 30, 2008  03:26 PM ET
