Heat may add center soon

Apparently, the Miami Heat no longer is taking small steps in its quest to add a much-needed big man to the roster. Heat president Pat Riley said Friday the team could address its void at center as early as Saturday. Miami has worked out free agents Lorenzen Wright, Jamaal Magloire and D.J. Mbenga, and has inquired about others in recent days. With the Heat operating above the league's salary cap and having already utilized all of its $5.6 million mid-level exception, Riley said a ''methodical approach'' has been taken to upgrade the center position as the Sept. 27 start of training camp looms.

Okay...how is it that NBA teams keep recycling washed up or never-been big men. Lorenzen Wright, Jamaal Magloire and D.J. Mbenga, c'mon.....! There has to be somebody in the D-League or coming out of college that give a little more than this. And how the heck is this a methodical approach to upgrading the center position?

Big men quality has sunk to an unprecedented low... NBA scouts are even looking at players out of places that have like 20 basketbal courts in the whole country. Does Pete Newll still run his Big Man camp? All of the above need to run through it a few times to develop some game.

Well said, but this is the best he could do after spending over 2 freakin' years trying to find a freakin' point guard. I said months ago that this team needed a center--now Riley is stuck with what's left. It makes me sick to think that he is slated for the Hall of Fame. What a moron.

Magloire shores up depth

The Heat added to its depth at center Friday by agreeing to terms with free agent Jamaal Magloire.

LET THE HATIN BEGIN - EVERYONE TIME TO GET SOME PUNCHES IN they damn well deserve it

Riley said at the start of the offseason he could envision the team opening with incumbent starting power forward Udonis Haslem at center, as a means of also getting trade-deadline acquisition Shawn Marion and first-round draft choice Michael Beasley into the starting lineup.

...there's nothing wrong with signing magloire to be your third center. he was an allstar a few years ago, he coaches up younger players, and isn't found shooting up clubs at 3:00 in the morning. but that's not the point. the heat don't need a third center - they need a starting center. riley's moves are like window dressing just so they can say in the papers that they're busy. mark blount, joel anthony, and david padgett are your bench centers, already. do something important.....

August 30, 2008  10:43 AM ET

SIgh....I guess this is the move that will put the Heat over the top this year....

How can Haslem play center...? He is actually a little undersized even at power forward. (6'8", 230). That is not going to work...If you play against the the Dayton Beach Corona Club on a daily basis, sure, but aginst NBA teams, it is going to be an abysmal failure..

Best thing for Miami to do is pony up my namesake and some spare garbage for a good big man (Sam Dalembert would be nice) and a decent young wing (Ahh, Thaddeus Young). This would open up the way for Miami to really move out of its current condition and into contention.

August 30, 2008  11:17 AM ET

okay think about this.......what if they traded haslem and idk blout or someone to the phoenix suns for the better lopez brother or to the nets (they probably want some expiring contracts) for josh boone maybe chris douglas roberts its hard to find traditional big men out there but please don settle for mbenga

August 30, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Why didn't they just sign David Harrison. He is much younger and overall a better player?

August 30, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Benga is not washed up all he needs is minutes lets not 4get before Chandler came 2 cp3 county he was garbage now he is allstar material , Kobe helped Bynum turn pro rite, im sure with D Wade's help Benga will blossom as for jamal Magloire...no contest!
Then again i have been proved wrong before.

August 30, 2008  12:11 PM ET

DJ Mbenga blossom...? You must have some talent in the first place for it to develop...

August 30, 2008  01:34 PM ET

No, not Mbenga! Get Magloire or Wright, but NOT Mbenga.

August 30, 2008  04:56 PM ET

Why did they give so much of the MLE to that James Jones guy when their biggest holes are the 5 and the 1.

Miami will be better this season only because well its hard to do worse than they did last year but your biggest holes can't be at center/power forward and point guard. You at least need a really good guy that you can post up that can get you easy baskets or command double teams or a really good point guard that can find guys in order to be a real threat or even make the playoffs. Otherwise your basically the Chicago Bulls of last year.

August 30, 2008  06:34 PM ET

the heat have to decide if their rebuilding, or if they are still trying to be in contention...

August 30, 2008  07:28 PM ET

Pat Riley is confused. What is he doing? I don't hate the Magloire pickup...I thought Kwame Brown would have been a better risk...Riley seems to be signing players on a whilm. 4 point guards? 4 sf (Marion, Powell, Dorrell Wright, Diawara, James Jones, potentially Beasley due to his size), 2 sgs (Cook, Wade), a bunch of undersized power forwards (Haslem, Lasme), and the rest are players who have no position (blount - plays soft like a shooting forward, playing center, but best suited at power forward cause of height and foot speed, Joel Anthony, game of a center, body of a medium sized power-forward, It's like he's not thinking, just signing...and not signing the right people when they are available as opposed to our other team Orlando, who've been getting all the right free agents.

August 30, 2008  07:29 PM ET

oops..meant 6 sf's in the above

August 30, 2008  10:14 PM ET

id say trade haslem and someone else or possibly a pick to the suns for the poofy haired lopez. chalmer wade marion beasley and lopez. thats a good team

August 30, 2008  11:50 PM ET

I agree, though I would go more for Brendan Haywood or something. He's a proven role player at center, and this year showed himself. Maybe Haslem and someone else for him.
