Can Sabathia refuse Yanks' offer?

Hank Steinbrenner wants the Yanks to now make CC Sabathia the highest-paid pitcher ever - an idea, by the way, that gestated elsewhere in the organization, but for which Hank will take credit. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who remains close to Sabathia after once being his manager in Cleveland, told me at Shea recently that all things being equal, Sabathia would prefer to play in his home state of California and in the NL where he could hit. But the Yanks probably will not make all things equal. They have roughly $88 million coming off the books and plan to redirect enough into an offer Sabathia can't refuse.

of course he CAN refuse it but the real question is Will he. Will 18 mil a year really make much of a difference 16 million a year. I dont know

CC however should not be the highest paid pitcher in the majors that should be either Peavy or Santana

Just can't seem to take anything Grossedout9 says seriously with those pictures. With every word I read, I find my sliding to the left at that pic. I mean, where do you even find a tattoo like that?!?!

The Yankees would be out of their minds to pay Sabathia 25 bucks a year. He is a lifetime 3.80 era pitcher in the American League and moving to the AL East is a whole different story. The Bronx is littered with pitchers who have tried to replicate against the likes of Boston what they did elsewhere. Santana or Halladay I agree with, Peavy pitches in the NL West, MLB's version of the College World Series.

US, if your eyes keep sliding to the left at GO's pic, maybe you have other issues?

WHy not try commenting on the issues instead of attacking. Oh thats right you don`t have any really value points to add to this story do you???????????? Nobody takes this site seriuos with all this halfbaked pretend to know everything..............

Wasn't attacking. Simply commeting on dude's tattoo. I have no problem with dudes making out on a sports commenting website. Afterall, I am a Democrat - and as such am highly tolerant of people that are different than myself. If you choose to be born ghey, then so be it. You DO have the right to marry your tattoo'd friend, no civil union, just straight up marriage (poor choice of words).

Just be yourself man. Bravo GO9... Bravo!

You're after this again? You have no idea what you're talking about.

7/205 is probably what they will offer. Hey, they gotta overspend, this is what they do. They will probably go into next season with a 215-235 mil payroll and thus fuel the speed in which a salary cap is implemented.

If they are going to make him the highest ever, that would have to trump the 28 mil they gave Clemens, which they probably aren't stupid enough to do, but ya never know. So much for the rational spending the Yankee fans have been talking about.

Over the last three years, CC's got a 1.20ERA against Boston.

August 31, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Clearly, if he goes to the Yankees, he is the greatest pitcher ever, like Brown, Pavano, Vasquez, Weaver, Irabu, Igawa, and so on and so on.

August 31, 2008  08:49 AM ET

CC is the man, bring him to the Bronx and cut/release/trade about half the team

trooper we proved you wrong the other day. Why do you persist in this folly? Sabathia has an ERA below 3.00 agaisnt all teams in the AL East that are NOT the Yankees. He dominates the East in fact as long as he isn;t pitchign agaisnt he Yankees. He is 7-3 against Tornoto, 7-1 against Tampa Bay and 5-0 against Baltimore. He has an ERA around 2.35 in Fenway Park. All the numbers indicate Sabathia would be a powerhouse against the AL East where he would, if the Yankees can sign him, pitch the majority of his games.

Thaty contract is not gonna happen. no way. maybe 21 mil a year or 6 years at about 126 plus.

August 31, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Teams today are built by drafting and development. Yankee fans need to look no further than the Sox. Right now, Papelbon, Youkilis, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Lowrie, Masterson, Lester, Delcarmen are all making huge impacts on the team and they have all been brought up after 2005. The Yanks have a couple of players, but they lose patience so quickly, look how fast they gave up on Rasner, Kennedy, Cabrera and so forth. The days of buying WS rings is over, word hasn't gotten to NY yet.

August 31, 2008  08:59 AM ET

And if i were the Yankees' ownership I would tell Cashman to bundle a package together that overwhelms the Jays and try for Halladay while they are at it. I know that is probably wishful thinking but, hey, ya never know if ya don't try.

Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Sabathia in the zoo? i hope not

August 31, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Yankee fans always complain about injuries this year. Here is what the Sox have lost during the year. Lugo, 3 months, Ortiz, 2 months, Lowell, 1.5 months so far, Drew, 1 month and counting, Matsuzaka, 3 weeks, Beckett, 3 weeks and counting, Wakefield, 1 month, Buchholz, 1 month, Schilling, entire season and probably career. But since the pipeline is filled with players from the minors, they are 7 games ahead.

August 31, 2008  09:03 AM ET

The Jays would never trade within the division, and what do the Yankees have that anyone wants? They give up on their farm players so fast, no one else would want them either.
