Shanahan looking to Ducks

As much as Brendan Shanahan - not just unsigned, but as yet even offered a contract by GM Glen Sather with training camp scheduled to open on Sept. 16 - wants to return for a third season with the Rangers, the free agent winger is prepared to investigate other opportunities. Even if that means moving across the country. The most interesting of which might be the opportunity for the 39-year-old winger to move west and join the Ducks. It is believed that Anaheim general manager Brian Burke reached out last week to Shanahan, the Rangers' third-leading goal-scorer with 23 last season behind 25-goal-scoring co-leaders Jaromir Jagr and Chris Drury. The Devils, Blues and Flyers are all believed to have indicated varying stages of interest in Shanahan.

Apart from the Blues, none of the abovementioned teams have loads of cap space left. Will Shanny accept a limited salary?

Columbus could really use a guy like Shanahan. He could be a mentor to Nash. Plus Columbus has the cap room. He might just give them enough talent to have them finally make the playoffs.

The only way he ends up in a Flyers uniform, is if he agrees to a contract worth twenty bucks a year. The Flyers need to lose salary not add to it.

BlueJacket, you just keep telling yourself that.

He's still good for 20g, 20a in 60 games. Could help some team.

i loved shanny in ny but hes done. he belonged in adult league hocky in the playffs compared to the peguins. he could go to a team needing some leadership who has a shot of making the playoffs this year. columbus, edmonon, or st louis would be viable options

I'm a hard-core Rangers fan, so I am a bit perplexed as to why Glenn and Jim haven't anted up.

JD seemed like he really wanted him in STL......I wonder if that has cooled?

Shanny could definitely help a lot of teams still. He is a very good PP producer, has great leadership skills and is a proven performer in all areas of the game. He would be a great leader on a developing club (don't think Shanny wants that role) or a solid piece on a contender.. maybe a 3rd liner who can score 20 goals and play on the 2nd PP unit.

He would be a great pickup for the Ducks.

Hasn't Cryin' Burke learned from the Todd Bertuzzi fiasco? While we all know that Shanny is not Bertuzzi, we must recognize that he is pretty much done! His value at this point would be to serve as an on-ice mentor/coach to a team with a lot of young players.

The devils have enough now that vishnevski unloaded 1.6 million of the cap, but you do have a point, philly would have to unload knuble at least, and the ducks are already over the cap by 2 mil, so unless he takes a contract under a mil, hes not going to the ducks, right now i see him in a rangers jersey if the rags lose the sundin sweepstakes, or a devils or blues jersey

Shanny has something to offer alot of teams. The big question is who else would he want to play for and for how much(little).

September 1, 2008  04:00 AM ET

go to dallas we need the leadership with barnes on the bench

September 1, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Shanahan won't fit in with the ducks because he's not a dirty player, he has class, and he doesn't whine. Plain and simple.

September 1, 2008  01:55 PM ET

Should have stayed in Detroit and had another ring.

September 1, 2008  08:44 PM ET

I'm kinda surprised the Kings haven't offered him $4M. They're so far under the cap, and so loaded up on kids, they can afford the cap hit, and they need the leadership.

Shanny just wants to play. 1 more time.
