Cut Buc headed to Detroit?

Detroit's version of the Cover 2 may be about to take on even more of a Buccaneer complexion. Tampa Bay released veteran linebacker Ryan Nece Saturday and the Lions are quite familiar with Nece's attributes. The Lions, who allowed the most yards in the league in 2007, already feature ex-Bucs Brian Kelly, Dewayne White, Dwight Smith, Chuck Darby and Kalvin Pearson on Joe Barry's defense. Barry and Lions head coach Rod Marinelli were Buc assistants on Monte Kiffin's staff when Nece entered the league with Tampa Bay in 2002.

Wouldn't be surprised. Lions are short on Linebackers, and being able to plug in someone who is familiar with the defense will help Nece's chances.

When I saw "Cut Buc" I thought it was Simms.

Will you and your fantasy football buddies please go bury your head in the sand. Evaluating people solely on stats takes so much away from great football players and the game in general. Thank you geeks and nerds who have never played the game but claim they know so much about it it due to "stats on NFL.com". When i see people load up my favorite sports bar 12 deep to have a fantasy football draft, being all of 160 pound pipsqueaks, it makes me want to kill you all.

A little harsh, but indeed true.

Agree with Brown, stats aren't the measure of a good player. Just people who don't know how to watch a football game for the strategy and love of the sport.

August 31, 2008  04:08 PM ET

Makes sense. Marinelli being a former Tampa Bay D-Coordinator, and all.

Couldn't agree more about the whole 'stats' issue; the whole concept of a Cover 2 is finding LB's that can cover a similar geographic area as a DB so quickness and lateral recovery are mandatory but often result in lower 'tackle' numbers. As a Lions fan I'd rather see a defensive concept built on absolute and near total commitment to shooting the gaps and 'killing' the QB. Cover 2 is a 'soft' philosophy in a game that rewards aggressive tendencies. The players Marinellis is signing are all trained in one way only and when his career ends (in 2 years I'm guessing) the Lions will have to embark on yet another 'rebuilding' cycle, which has been going on for forty years, except for a few playoff blessed 'Barry' years.

The Lions schedule is weaker at the beginning again, but there's no way they finish better than 7-9. Unfortunately.

Pretty funny Lady. I thought it meant that someone had been to the Moyle for a procedure in the offseason. ;-)

They should post hallway entrance signs to Millen and Marinelli's offices "OFFICE LEFT". They would see the signs every morning, go back home and the Cardinals could sneak in their replacements......

I kind of had an idea of what you meant, Oso, but I went to google to make sure. I found out the proper spelling is Mohel and the Rabbi conducting the service (doing the procedure) is called a Bris Mohel. You are always leading me to knowledge. =-]
