Favre defends exit from Green Bay

Brett Favre wants to make one thing clear: He's not a wishy-washy, high-maintenance, selfish diva who can't make up his mind. This is the way the Packers, the team he carried on his broad shoulders for some 16 years before the Jets traded for him last month, spun the tale. And this is why Favre has felt the need to defend himself. How does he feel he treated the Packers? "I could have told them, 'I'll come back,' even though at the time I didn't want to," Favre said. "But then July rolls around we start camp or whatever and I go, 'God, I need to walk away.' To me, that was worse than saying, 'Guys, if you want an answer right now, I'm not 100-percent committed and because of that, I'm retiring.' "The day I told (Packers head coach Mike) McCarthy I was going to retire, he said, 'Are you sure?' I said, 'No, I'm not sure, but you want an answer so I'm giving you an answer.' I told him, 'I'm not confident in this decision.' I was second-guessing it from Day One.'

BRETT the JETT, your Wife Really wears the pants, doesn't she. jerry

He still does not get it. It is done. Just shut up and play. To keep the discussion going just makes him sound like the person he says he is not....

August 31, 2008  08:33 AM ET

got to agree with 50.

August 31, 2008  09:00 AM ET

shut up already you wishy washy high maintenence diva!
over-rated.

August 31, 2008  09:17 AM ET

What I can't stand is someone like him sitting in a press conference, tears streaming down his face, saying this is it, he's hanging it up. Then the team is ready to move on and suddenly, in pops Brett saying, "Hey, changed my mind. I think I want to play!" If you're retiring then mean it.

And why do you think he is in a Jets uniform now...

August 31, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Not my point Real Sports. Retire or don't. Just don't go boo-hooing on national TV saying you are then don't. Credibility factor zero.

August 31, 2008  09:50 AM ET

He is not a wishy washy guy but he was second guessing from Day 1.....

How about earlier in the offseason when he was thinking about coming back? You know right before those league meetings in Florida? Right before they were to start he tells GB he is thinking of coming back, but by the end of the meetings he has changed his mind AGAIN.

And you wonder why GB was unwilling to commit to a guy who simply can't make up his mind. Right now all we know for sure is spite is certainly a motive for him to keep playing.

August 31, 2008  09:58 AM ET

He spun this tale all by himself, and he still can't shut up. He's a drama queen that craves constant attention. Now he's resorting to telling people he doesn't to get it. Just amazing.

I think most people thought he was a "wishy-washy, high-maintenance, selfish diva who can't make up his mind" BEFORE the circus he created (all by himself) this year. I know I did.

August 31, 2008  10:13 AM ET

He need to just let it go and play football..Personally, I feel sorry for the Jets committing to him...

August 31, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Has this guy always been an egocentric dooshbag or is this new?

August 31, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Also agree with 50 and others, Brett didn't want to go to the Jets,
took 48 hours convincing him Packers wouldn't let me play,
now all of a sudden he had Jets in mind:p
Yeah "Whatever" Just play and shut up!!!

August 31, 2008  10:54 AM ET

After this season, I'm sure the decision will be much easier to make.

Just shut up already. Let your arm do the talking. I'm really tired of your flap trap.

August 31, 2008  12:28 PM ET

For 3 years Brett you discussed retirement with management, and now you say that wasn't an issue. From what I've read and have seen from you here in the GB area, you thought you OWNED THIS TEAM. Trust me on this Mr. Favre. New York will OWN YOUR A*S*S before the end of the season.

Favre has every right to play, whether people like it or not.. You readers tired of it don't have to read it anymore. Please don't. Blame the reporters, they're the one's asking, talking, writing, and inciting. I too am tired of it, but just want to see some football. Readers lording over this with their opinion are just as bad as they perceive Brett to be. Everyone, lets just leave it alone. Regardless of perceived flopping, though, Favre would give the Pack the better chance to compete for a championship. And that is what it is supposed to be all about. Changing one's mind isn't nearly the baggage others have brought to teams. Any lack of success in NY doesn't mean the Pack couldn't have won with him. I know people hate the whole situation, as do I. Really. But the Pack will be kicking themselves. They will lose more games without him than they would with him.
