Signs pointing to Sundin retirement?

If you do the analysis and read between the unwritten lines, everything seems to be adding up to a retirement announcement from Mats Sundin. He returns to skate on Friday in a charity event in Toronto, the first time he has been on skates since the March night his season ended with the Maple Leafs. But that isn't an indication of anything regarding his intention to play. His actions this summer have been inconsistent with his past: Normally, he decides on his future in July. Normally, he begins skating in a game he first organized himself around Aug. 11. The older you get, the more preparation is necessary for the long season. And while he has remained in condition, he hasn't remained in playing shape. Sundin's primary agent, J.P. Barry, has played the guessing game all summer long, along with media and fans, trying to keep the Sundin ball in the air: Remember, a retirement gets the agent no commission. A $20-million US signing in Vancouver is a handsome windfall. It is in Barry's best interest to keep Sundin's name alive in negotiations and now he is indicating Sundin may want to play half a season -- the very notion Sundin himself dismissed at the Stanley Cup finals. The hunch here, based on nothing but instinct, is that retirement looms. The announcement could come on the eve of the Leafs opening training camp.

Sundin has undecided his way out of the hearts of Toronto. Tough place for a player to play is Toronto. Especially in the limelight. He would get booed off the ice at the ACC if he were to return.

It's much more interesting then this tired old story. However, once again the Leaf rumors are monopolizing the NHL news. As always.
It's tough to be popular or unpopular in Toronto...whatever the case may be!

I now know, no more, or less about the future of Mats Sundin. What an insightful article.

T&R has been reading my comments, I've been predicting this for a couple of days.

This whole article/paragraph is "SPAM." Do you idiots at T&R ever edit your crap before it goes to print? Because if you did, this wouldn't be here!

August 31, 2008  03:33 PM ET

W-w-why, FN? Why don't you just wait until this guy decides something????

August 31, 2008  06:56 PM ET

News flash to T&R - Gordie Howe will play one game with the Wings this season so that he will have played in six different decades of professional hockey.

I know it isn't the truth, but it could be a rumor. And it is certainly more interesting that more crap about Sundin.

Gordie already did that...another would be 7

As a long time Leaf fan. I`d rather he retire than go to another team.
I want Mats to do what makes him happy.
Playing with Naslund in New York would be cool to see however.

Sundin should go to the Rangers and Play with Naslund

@ Baun-ded

I don't think the majority of Leafs fans are tired of Sundin - only the people who religiously follow sites like this, who have been inundated with Sundin news, and resent him as a result, haha.

It is clear that it's both the sports media, and JP Barry, who want to keep this story alive. Sundin himself hasn't even really said anything all summer, to the media.

Though I wish he would have taken a trade to help the team last season, I think you will see a warm ceremony for Sundin, if he chooses to retire. Likewise, I think you will see elation from Leafs fans who want the team to do well this year, and who don't understand what "rebuilding" means. :D

Signs pointing to Sundin retirement

And at the apex of the sun's arc, the ray of light reflected off his head, bouncing off the glass - fronted NHL headquarters and across the street, lighting the ancient Mesopotamian oil lamp in the Hall of Antiquities, where the flame burned BLUE.

O Flying Pig That Sees All, where art thou????

In answer to your question, T&R: God I hope so!

What is the universal sign for Sundin retirement?--no U turn? I don't know about other signs, but the canary in the tunnel died last night. That has to mean something.

Fortunately I was saved from these stories as I kept watch over my beloved New Orleans. Thankfully it appears to have had little effect. I am deciphering all, but somehow I just know the storm was Sundin's fault.
