How long is OSU's Wells out?

Hours after Ohio State's season-opening 43-0 victory over Youngstown State, there were some firm answers about Beanie Wells' third-quarter injury to his right foot but several remaining questions. X-rays were negative, so it's not a fracture. Kicker Ryan Pretorius said Wells told him it was his big toe, and an Ohio State staffer confirmed it was a problem at the front of his foot. Jim Tressel was noncommittal on Wells' future, though any assumption about a perfectly healthy Wells for Ohio University on Saturday might be too much. What really matters is a visit to the No. 3 Southern California in 13 days. Tressel encouraging Wells to play through pain was the storyline of the start of last season, but there are no doubters about his desire now.

This injury happened right in front of me, scary scary stuff. I just hope he plays when he is fully recovered to prevent permanent damage. Of course I also hope that this happens before USC lol. Can't wait to see hopefully a good, clean game with a whole lot of D.

if it's turf toe, that's going to be a problem cuz it's a biiiitch of an injury. It's what put Adrian Arrington on IR with the 'Aints. Unless those pharmacists at OSU responsible for bulking up Vernon hGholston have some great pain killers to give him, Wells might be out for a LONG time.

August 31, 2008  09:23 AM ET

I am very nervous and upset. I just hope he gets healthy. the whole bar went silent after this injury. You could hear a pin drop. LOL

August 31, 2008  09:28 AM ET

even if Wells can't play, there is enough talent at the RB position for the sucknuts to be fine with. Sure it hurts because Wells is the home run hitter but great teams have depth and OSU has depth.

August 31, 2008  09:31 AM ET

I just don't get how he even hurt his foot or ankle or whatever. There was no contact at all, he just took a couple steps, let go of the ball as if it was on fire and then had to be helped off the field. I agree etc_ that it would be scary for OSU to lose Wells to an injury but what really happened there? It almost looked phony to me. Is there any chance of that being the case? And yeah, the way USC lit up Va. on the road, it should show just how good or not the D of OSU.

August 31, 2008  10:04 AM ET

It sucks to have that happen as a marquee player. But not to rub it in, why was he still in in the third quarter when OSU had the game way under wraps?

August 31, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Conesy, I asked myself the same question for the rest of the day. Even after that, Boeckman was in running up the gut. Warden, it's easy to see why you're sore against Ghoulston, Michigan man. Unfortunately for you, Vernon's first interest was always powerlifting, which led him to football. Sorry to break it to you but he's pharmacy-free

Toe injuries and running backs are serious injuries. I'm not calling for panic though because there is enough talent at OSU to overcome.

August 31, 2008  11:00 AM ET

He's nothing without their fullbacks anyway. No big loss. Skeet Skeet.

August 31, 2008  11:15 AM ET

etc_04,

How do you know he's drug free? Did you taste his urine?

August 31, 2008  11:59 AM ET

yeah it sucks beanie may be out a game or a few, but they will probably just use pryor just like florida did with the leak/tebow combination. Pryor looked like a real deal, good looking runs. I know it was against "powerhouse" youngstown state, but his td run looked like he was sleepwalking into the endzone, i can't wait till you see the afterburners.

August 31, 2008  12:04 PM ET

After seeing this weeks games I'm changing my picks in the SEC and in the NC game.

OSU loses to USC big. USC is much better then expected and without Beanie they get crushed. USC beats LSU for the NC game. OSU loses the Big10 to Wisconsin.

In the SEC. UGA has too many key injuries (best OLB, best OL, best DL all out for year) to win. Auburn is not as good as expected and Alabama is better then expected. GT is better then expected - see Georgia. MSU is not very good. Arkansas is not very good. LSU can lose the Auburn game and still go back to the SECCG. The score of the Florida game does not tell the real story - watch the first half and you will see the weaknesses. Florida will lose at least 2. Tebow did not look sharp against a hapless Hawaii. The running backs are nothing special. Chris Rainey is fast but did not live up to the hype. We will see about UT on Labor Day. UT may very well be the strongest of the 3 teams in the east. SEC east is weaker then expected and the west with a resurgent Alabama and sharp LSU looks stronger.

i hope hes ready for usc... anyone know? usc looked great yesterday... it will be hard for the buckeyes to go into l.a and win against the trojans without beanie.... i pray hes better

August 31, 2008  12:10 PM ET

I suspect that even if Beanie cannot play against USC, OSU will roll out another fine RB. This team has tons of talent and a good O line can make an avg RB good (and a good RB great).

I would not put a lot of faith in USC's win over UVA. UVA is not the same team from last year and across the board the ACC really stinks. Heck, it is probably worse than the Big 10 (which is pretty bad).

August 31, 2008  12:14 PM ET

OSU like Georgia has a stable of running backs, but Beanie is special as is Moreno. Doubt the #2 guy is as good as the previous Heisman front-runner but if he is then this is his chance to make a name for himself.

August 31, 2008  12:22 PM ET

He'll play against USC. He may be in pain, but he'll play. there is no one on the team like Beanie. everyone can be replaced easily, but not him. He stiff-arms everybody, runs over them, and past them with his speed. OSU has decent backs like Saine, Boom Heron, and Mo Wells. But they are more like Pittman, Mendenhall from Ill last year, etc. OSU will be good, anyway, but they need this guy... BAD!! More than Boeckman, Laurinitus, Jenkins, anyone. They all have great back-ups.

August 31, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Well Warden I wouldnt be concentrating on Wells' injury so much as you losing another home opener. That makes it back to back, 89-90 ring a bell?

SEC_PAC_FAN you can't make evaluations of conference championships , let alone a National Championship and players' performances after game one; do you know how many injuries could happen, and how many more upsets there will be? Maybe in ten weeks your speculations would be better.

Obviously Deep South Sider and other USC fans would be excited, good job on scoring points on a pitiful defense, its going to be a heck of a lot harder playing against an OSU defense.

Obviously everyone is holding their colective breath and expecting the worse, but Beanie is going ot be fine, and I suspect he'll be playing for USC. You all saw the numbers he put up on a bummed ankl;e last year, and Beanie is going to want to play. I wouldn't overhype this whole situation too much.

August 31, 2008  12:29 PM ET

And also SEC PAC FAN I don't know if you checked recently, but Beanie still is the Heisman front-runner.

August 31, 2008  12:39 PM ET

A lot of "Spam" in here....you never want to see a star (Heisman candidate) player go down during any game of the season, but it is what it is as they say. Too bad we don't see a lot of this in baseball. The occasional idiot out fielder ramming the wall at full speed is about it. Or sometimes two other idiots running into each other. Baseball get's boring at times.
