Jets interested in Lynch?

10:02 AM ET 09.01 | The Jets quietly made a run at veteran safety John Lynch before he signed with the Patriots in mid-August. Now that the Patriots released him yesterday, the Jets might make another bid to sign him. The Jets have just three safeties (Kerry Rhodes, Eric Smith and Abram Elam) and aren't completely sold on any of them except Rhodes. Still, if they sign Lynch, they wouldn't be getting the same player who made nine Pro Bowls.

Pats sign ex-Jets, Jets sign ex-Pats. Anything new out there ?

September 1, 2008  10:26 AM ET

The jets are just desperately trying to keep up with the patriots but I don't see it happening for a while.

September 1, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Man, I have always like Jon Lynch......but I've got to think it is time for him to give it up

September 1, 2008  10:29 AM ET

He is still a tough run defender.

September 1, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I would prefer to remember John Lynch as an active leader rather than on the bench waiting to get into a game. If he did not have the legs/speed to be a hybrid linebacker in the BB scheme then it is time to hang it up.

He'll be on the Pats 9/8. No way he want to play his last season for a cellar dweller.

September 1, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Even I knew Lynch wasn't the player he once was, Tampa
knew, Denver knew, now Pats, yeah you aint kidding desperate
those Jets are, even my grandma could beat Lynch, hes that SHOW!
And he uses dirty hits to try to over come slowness, enjoy
those penalties Jets!!! Suckers!!!

The Pats are supposedly planning to resign him after Week 1, so his salary won't be guarenteed. My guess is they have expressed this to John, and he's more interested in a championship than $500,000, so he'll resist signing with a bubble team like the Jets, and will just wait on the Pats.

"He'll be on the Pats 9/8. No way he want to play his last season for a cellar dweller."
You've got to be kidding me. First of all, what makes you think the Jets are going to be "cellar dwellers?" they're a much, much better team than they were two years ago when they went 10-6 and they beat the Cheatriots in their own Foxhole, and they were close in every game last season till the end. Secondly, whaddya mean he'll be on the Pats? They released him and want to re-sign him after week 1 because they're cheap and don't want to guarantee his salary, so if the Jets would offer him a guaranteed contract, why shouldn't he consider it? Another, stupid, arrogant, Pats fan that is living in another univerese... Wake up! Your team lost the biggest upset in NFL history last season. They've won the same amount of titles the Jets have the last four years. Zero. Ousted by Denver, collapse vs. Indy, and sacked all over the joint at the hands of the G-Men... Your "just another team." A contender that is there at the end, and folds now that there isn't the resources to make those "genius second-half offensive adjustments" that the Spygaters were known for... JUST GET OVER IT! 18-1!!! LMAO!!!!

With all these old timers on the Jets roster, they team is contemplating having AARP day at Giants Stadium.

I could have sworn I heard the same thing said about the Pats at Gillette.

September 1, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Oh god please no....
no more signing of past their prime players.
I'm tired of short term solutions
let someone develop alongside Rhodes for the next 5-7years

September 1, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Jets love to sign Pat rejects

September 1, 2008  01:34 PM ET

I think part of the problem has to do with teams wanting the big payoff NOW not in the 5-7 years it would take to develop some of these younger players into the powerhouses they could be with time on their side. Everyone's mindset is on one thing--winning the BIG ONE. I mean, look at my Pats. They won 16 games in the regular season. They won 2 playoff games. The Giants win the Super Bowl and just about everyone labels the Pats as having a loser year because they got beat in the Super Bowl. I really don't know how any team is expected to let players develop when the message is WIN IT NOW.

Quite frankly I can't believe they kept Cassel instead of Gutierrez. Sure hope they have a good explanation for that one.

"Quite frankly I can't believe they kept Cassel instead of Gutierrez. Sure hope they have a good explanation for that one."

Cassel has played like a bum. Both of the remaining quarterbacks out played him. Cassel was settling for field goals or punting the majority of play. The rest of the time he was throwing it to the other team. Chad Jackson being cut is a disappointment as well as he seems like he could be good. I just think that Chad never put in the study time. He was so inconsistent. I'd really like to see Gutierrez back on the practice squad.

Lynch will never EVER sign with those filthy **** wrenching Jets ! They think all of a sudden grandpa Favre is going to walk in with his pedialite and pop in his dentures and bring them to the playoffs ? Well here's a little reminder Jets fans he took his team there last year and threw one of the WORST interceptions in nfl history ! Sure he's an upgrade over Mrs. Pennington but Matt Cassel could do a a better job ! So congrats Jets fans for trading for a washed up 39 year old quarterback , and it doesnt surprise me . It's just another desperate move by a desperate team to try to try and make the # 2 slot in the ACF east ...BEHIND the Patriots. You guys were all jumping around for Mr. Gholston in the draft but he looks like a slug on muscle relaxers when he's out on the field and just may be the BIGGEST bust of the 08' Draft ! I think he got what 3 tackles in all four pre season games ? He won't be near the STUD Jerod Mayo will be for us because BB and SP know how to draft , they know how to produce a PREMIUM team ! Ohh no here it comes the Patriots HUGE superbowl loss ... All that aside the G-Men cleaned house all around the nfl ... congrats to them , they were about as lucky as filthy jets fan in tj max to find jets memoribillia all on clearence ! Why is that so lucky because all Jets garb so be sentenced to the most foul grungy dumpsters in the slummiest towns of america because thats where it belongs ! Give it to the homeless ! Either way we lost but guess what we still have 3 precious shiny superbowl rings which the Jets certainly do NOT have , they dont even have their own stadium for cris sakes they have to share it withthe G - Men because they have cat puke records of 4-12 . When you make it to the superbowl them give me a call but looking at what you have be overjoied if you make a solidseason and go 7-9 , 8-8 because Mangini is too busy eating donuts signing ex pats players to pick their brain apart than to try to get ahis horse manuer team into gear. As for John Lynch haaha you can't afford with Mr. Favre's $$$ going against your cap while the pats have tons of room and Lynch will come galloping back once he gets the call to come HOME to the PATS ! A PREMIUM TEAM ! While the Jets drool to keep up .. hahaha next we will see Jets sign Chad Jackson via Patriots waiver ! That's right pick up our scraps ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LETS GO PATS !
